Their strategic plan has them growing significantly over the coming years, and they seek a Director of Finance & Operations to develop and implement internal systems and processes to support our ambitious plans.As the Director of Finance & Operations, you will be a core member of the senior leadership team and a key thought partner to the Executive Director. You will help the organization implement its strategy by developing internal operations supporting growth. You will lead the organization in optimizing financial and operational systems across a globally dispersed staff and oversee all financial, human, and operational functions. Currently, you will manage two staff members: a Senior Accountant, General Ledger, and Grants, and an Executive Assistant, with potential for additional growth. Our client works with Insperity and is in a co-employment work relationship. The organization handles the day-to-day operations related to its core business, and Insperity handles administrative responsibilities, such as payroll processing and benefits, and supports the company with human resource issues. You will be the main point of contact for the organization with Insperity.To be an ideal candidate, you must be a facilitative leader with extensive experience leading finance and operations at a senior level, including in the non-profit sector; be professionally analytical, with experience translating external strategy into efficient internal systems and processes; and be a strategic thinker who can find solutions to existing and anticipated “pinch points” in the organization.To thrive, you need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, organizational development or equivalent; MBA preferred
  • 7+ years of total demonstrated experience in operations and/or finance, including experience on a senior leadership team in a nonprofit environment
  • Knowledge of and experience with nonprofit financial accounting and systems, including compliance with governmental awards and A-133 auditing standards
  • Experience developing and administering HR policies and procedures related to hiring, onboarding performance review, employee relations, labor law, and employee benefits
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills and a demonstrated ability to use good judgment to make sound decisions
  • Ability to streamline and implement new structures and roles that create efficiency and support organizational growth
  • Strong passion for mentoring staff and serving as a thought partner to a team
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as across all levels of an organization; ability to work both strategically and tactically
  • Experience building cohesion through collaboration throughout the organization
  • Exemplary personal and professional integrity; low ego; a good sense of humor
  • Authorization to work in the United States for any employer
  • International experience and Spanish language skills a plus

Your responsibilities as the Director of Finance and Operations will include:

  • Leading efforts to operationalize an ambitious five-year strategic plan as key member of the senior leadership team
  • Advising the Executive Director, senior leadership team, and all staff on best practices as they relate to organizational systems and processes
  • Supervising Senior Accountant, General Ledger and Grants and Executive Assistant, offering guidance and support on day-to-day tasks; offering mentorship and professional development to both team members as well as setting clear goals and expectations
  • Serve as “right-hand” to the Executive Director, to include serving as Acting Executive Director when the Executive Director is out of office
  • Overseeing three key business functions:

Operations

  • Developing and executing both short- and long-term operational strategies to optimize organizational growth, productivity, and efficiency
  • Identifying, streamlining, and implementing efficient internal operating procedures and policies across all departments
  • Overseeing legal compliance, risk management, and insurance

Finance

  • Managing grant and contract compliance, with a primary focus on grants and contracts received, but also administered subgrants and contracts
  • Overseeing budgeting and financial forecasting, including cash flow and unrestricted net asset projections
  • Overseeing the preparation of regular financial reports for the Board, Programs, and leadership
  • Supervising bookkeeping and monthly accounting processes, and annual audit activities
  • Directing the annual budgeting process, ensuring it is consistent with the organization’s strategy, programs, goals, and initiatives
  • Oversee all financial compliance of international programs in partnership with the Finance and Operations Manager, Western Caribbean.

Human Resources

  • Building an organizational culture that attracts and retains a diverse, productive, and passionate staff
  • Developing and implementing guidelines for recruitment, employee evaluations, professional development, and promotion
  • Partnering with Insperity to oversee insurance and benefits policies and contracts and ensure competitive and cost-effective coverage
  • Collaborating with leadership to establish and maintain a trusting, inclusive, collaborative, and productive environment
