Position Description

The Director of Global Business Development, PGME is responsible for growing revenue by identifying profitable business opportunities, developing long-term business growth strategies, and establishing a strategic vision for the PGME portfolio of certificate, continuing education and master’s programs that meet the goals of the Office for External Education (OEE) and Harvard Medical School (HMS), including financial objectives.  The Director of Global Business Development, PGME will strategically lead the implementation of this vision through operational oversight, developing and managing new program opportunities with international partners, while stewarding existing relationships. The Office for External Education provides health care professionals, corporations, and lay audiences with broad access to Harvard Medical School’s peerless and constantly expanding body of medical knowledge.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Business Development/Relationship Management 
  • Identify and pursue business opportunities for new global/custom program activities with international sponsors. Liaise directly with sponsors to create opportunities that achieve revenue goals.
  • Lead the expansion and reach of global programming to a larger, worldwide audience that achieves both the mission and financial goals of HMS.
  • Initiate, develop, and steward relationships with international partners to ensure PGME achieves its academic and revenue goals.
  • Focus on new business development, cultivating and evaluating new partnerships, collaboration, and client engagement opportunities for consistency with PGME’s mission, operational feasibility, and financial objectives.
  • Represent PGME to international partners and constituents, including faculty, partner contacts, and governmental ministries, and major institutions.
  • Enhance PGME, OEE, and HMS reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests, exploring opportunities to add value and develop revenue opportunities.

Strategic Planning: 

  • Establish a strategic plan for PGME that aligns with OEE, unit goals and expands the reach of these programs to a larger, more diverse worldwide audience.
  • Lead the implementation of the strategic plan through development successful launch of new programs and operational leadership of existing programs with the Senior Director and Senior Associate Dean to deliver on PGME and OEE goals.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations to potential partners, clients and PGME program participants.
  • Establish, implement and achieve operational objectives by contributing information and recommendations on PGME strategies, plans and reviews.

Financial Management: 

  • Draft and execute letters of agreement between PGME and partner entities (dollar amounts ranging from $100,000 to $2 million plus), working with the Office of General Counsel and appropriate finance offices within Harvard University to ensure adherence to university guidelines and policies.
  • Develop appropriate projected activity costs and translate these costs into internal budget templates for submission of educational grant requests, as needed.
  • Meet PGME and OEE financial objectives by forecasting requirements and preparing an annual budget.

Communication/Outreach Management:

  • Communicate and utilize the value proposition for the global market designed to enable the team to identify, form, and grow longstanding relationships with clients in all targeted regions.
  • Lead outreach to, and coordination of, collaborators and partners both inside and outside Harvard.
  • Balance faculty development priorities, client program objectives, and commercial terms in a sustainable manner.
  • Provide input to marketing content, as necessary, in support of the event strategy to increase brand awareness, promote global education programs and prospect pipeline.
  • Other related duties and responsibilities, as required.
  • Manage one staff member – Manager of Global Program Development.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required
  • Minimum of 8 years’ relevant work experience
  • Supervisory experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Effective team leader/member.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work with senior-level managers and diverse, international stakeholders, including scientists, scholars, policymakers, and high-level leaders in the public, non-profit and private sectors.
  • Willingness and ability to travel overseas 40%+, which includes weekends, holidays, and off-peak hours.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit with capacity to manage multiple constituencies against the backdrop of changing priorities and complex projects with competing deadlines.
  • Significant program/brand management experience(s) that develop high-level contacts, close new business, and manage client relationships.
  • Independent and proactive.
  • A sense of humor a plus and grace under pressure.

Additional Information

The scope of PGME activities is not geographically bounded, and this role requires program development and delivery activities to be conducted on campus and off, both in the US and internationally. Given this scope, the Director of Global Business Development, PGME will be responsible for enhancing/supporting relationships between faculty, researchers, and clients involved in the creation of intellectual capital of HMS as well as working with faculty, partner contacts, and Ministries of Government staff to strategically ensure integration and coordination of educational activities.

Work Format Details

This is a hybrid position that is based in Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
