Reporting to the Senior Director of Procurement Services, the Director of Supplier Diversity, plays a vital role in leading enterprise-wide efforts with lasting impacts on the University of Virginia’s diverse procurement program and communities we serve. Through strategic leadership, stakeholder engagement, and program management, the Director pilots the creation of a more inclusive and equitable university environment while driving positive economic impact in diverse communities across a broad spectrum of stakeholders.Key Responsibilities:Supplier Engagement & Strategy:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive strategies for identifying, evaluating, and engaging diverse suppliers while communicating university values and objectives to stakeholders to ensure alignment.
  • Establish and maintain strategic partnerships with diverse supplier organizations identifying mutually beneficial opportunities to increase engagement, foster connections and increase community presence. Pair internal opportunities and possible partnerships with diverse supplier community.
  • Identify opportunities for community engagement and involvement in supplier activities. Represent UVA through outreach supplier events, workshops, and networking opportunities to connect suppliers with UVA procurement opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the Procurement team to continuously integrate supplier diversity vendors into sourcing and contracting processes.
  • Partner with UVA departments across the enterprise to understand current and future business needs and develop strategic roadmaps to embed supplier diversity principles into procurement practices and decision-making. Provide training and guidance to university staff on the importance of supplier diversity and their role in supporting the program.

Compliance and Risk Management:

  • Serve as the primary University contact with the Virginia Department of Small Business and Supplier Diversity (SBSD), and accountable for submitting required reporting to the agency.
  • Knowledgeable regarding procurement related state legislation to ensure the university engages on critical issues.
  • Implement measures to enhance transparency in supplier onboarding and UVA procurement processes.
  • Responsible for drafting subcontracting plans for faculty/researchers competing for federal grants.

Program Management:

  • Responsible for identifying best industry practices in supplier diversity programs and reporting on key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the effectiveness of supplier and local engagement initiatives.
  • Communicate successes, challenges, and opportunities to relevant stakeholders, university and state leadership, and solicit feedback for continuous improvement.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.
  • Demonstrated experience in supplier diversity, procurement, or supply chain management, preferably in a higher education or public sector environment.
  • Ability to build rapport and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and relationship-building skills, with the competency to engage diverse stakeholders effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute strategic initiatives to drive positive outcomes for both the University and surrounding community.

Experience: Eight years of relevant procurement, payables, and supervisory experience. Experience in industry contracting, administration and commercial purchasing, and detailed knowledge of contracting and procurement policies and procedures. Able to read, analyze and interpret contract terms and conditions, financial reports, and technical specifications for statements of works (SOW’s). Able to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals and effectively present information and respond to questions from CIO and senior management.
Licensure: None required. Certified in specialized area, such as Certified Purchasing Manager (CPM), or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred.PHYSICAL DEMANDSThis is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers.
