As Director, US Sustainability and Government Affairs, you will be working with government agencies, non-government organizations, foundations, and other entities on behalf of AstraZeneca. The role is for a highly engaged strategic leader who will work with government officials and other potential partners on a variety of subject matters including government health, climate and sustainability matters and health equity.

This position will develop relationships with government agencies and organizations with the objective of assessing possible partnerships. The position will also work on sustainability issues and (including strategic and tactical design and implementation) to shape programming, legislation/regulation/access and other workstreams consistent with business objectives. The successful candidate will report to the Head of Government Partnerships and Political Programs.

Major Responsibilities:

External

  • Develop and execute governmental and organization partnerships based on company priorities.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with key influencers including but not limited to elected officials, executive agencies, trade associations, think tanks, and third-party allies on the local and state level.

Internal

  • Provide leadership within the organization on sustainability policy issues.
  • Ensure alignment and integration of key business objectives and strategies among all AstraZeneca stakeholders, including commercial business partners, market access, sales and marketing.
  • Identify, analyze and act on legislation and regulatory initiatives as well as emerging issues that impact the company.
  • Act as an internal thought leader and resident expert on sustainability matters and strategic decision making on public policy.
  • Manage interaction and integration with commercial business, including developing and implementing legislative/regulatory strategies to assist and achieve brand objectives.
  • Strategically allocate and manage resources.
  • Liaison with Corporate Affairs internal/external customers to ensure strategic link with corporate brand initiatives.
  • Identify and act on legislative/regulatory opportunities pertaining to sustainability, health equity and corporate reputation.
  • Liaison with AstraZeneca’s federal government affairs lobbyists and state government affairs lobbyists on issues pertaining to specific issues.
  • Assist Head of Government Partnerships and Political Programs in managing contracts and consultants.
  • Understand AstraZeneca’s business goals and priorities; build strategies to support.
  • Identify and act on emerging issues in the political environment.

Essential Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Minimum 5-8 years of experience in government affairs, in a related role within the pharmaceutical industry and/or working in a related NGO or government role
  • Experience working on climate/sustainability issues
  • Strong public speaking and writing skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong desire to be part of a close-knit, highly focused team committed to unparalleled stakeholder satisfaction and helping make AstraZeneca a great place to work and grow
  • Demonstrated strong negotiation and advocacy skills
  • Knowledge of legislative, regulatory and political processes
  • Based in Washington, DC AZ Office
  • Occasional travel to other AZ sites and general business travel

Preferred Requirements:

  • Masters or Advanced degree preferred
  • 10+ years of experience in government, politics, or government affairs
  • Experience working on health equity issues
  • Deep knowledge of the healthcare industry especially with state/federal political influence on the pharmaceutical business
  • Strong internal stakeholder and alliance building capabilities
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across sales, market access, medical affairs, corporate affairs functions, among others
  • Demonstrated leadership ability to identify and focus on strategic priorities
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to influence and effectively lead internal and external audiences to desired outcomes.
  • Ability to manage numerous, competing priorities under pressure while effectively collaborating with internal partners
  • Sound business judgment and integrity and an ability to build credible, effective working relationships both internally and externally
  • Ability to bring together different internal partners, and move an agenda forward to resolution and action.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a highly matrixed corporate environment
  • Proficiency in standard business software applications
  • Experience with pharmaceutical cross-functional teams (allied development, public relations, policy)
