Through technical excellence, innovation, and a commitment to safety, we aim to be a trusted partner in ground investigation and geotechnical engineering.ROLE PURPOSEThe Drilling Operations Supervisor is responsible for managing all aspects of drilling operations, ensuring they are executed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with technical and project requirements. This leadership role includes overseeing on-site teams, maintaining operational quality, and upholding health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards. Acting as a key liaison between clients, project managers, and field teams, the Drilling Operations Supervisor plays a vital role in delivering successful ground investigation projects for Ground Control Geotechnical Solutions.Key Responsibilities:1. Operational Management

  • Plan, organise, and oversee daily drilling operations across multiple sites.
  • Ensure all drilling activities comply with project specifications, budgets, and schedules.
  • Mobilise and demobilise drilling rigs, equipment, and resources efficiently.
  • Monitor progress on-site, addressing risks and ensuring operational continuity.
  • Ensure compliance with all technical procedures and project deliverables.

2. Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead and manage drilling teams, including operatives, drillers, and support staff.
  • Assign responsibilities and ensure all team members are clear on their roles and objectives.
  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and support to less experienced team members to enhance their technical and operational skills.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and offer constructive feedback to team members.
  • Foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.

3. Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance

  • Champion a safety-first culture and enforce adherence to all HSE regulations.
  • Conduct and review site-specific risk assessments and method statements (RAMS).
  • Lead daily toolbox talks and safety briefings to ensure all team members are aware of site hazards and control measures.
  • Investigate and report safety incidents, implementing corrective actions where needed.
  • Ensure environmental considerations are factored into all operations, minimising impact.

4. Technical Oversight & Quality Assurance

  • Supervise a variety of drilling techniques, including cable percussion, rotary drilling, and dynamic sampling, ensuring technical accuracy and quality.
  • Oversee soil and rock sampling, ensuring compliance with British Standards (e.g., BS5930) and client specifications.
  • Review and verify drilling logs, site records, and other documentation for accuracy and completeness.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to resolve on-site challenges.
  • Maintain high standards of quality control, ensuring all deliverables meet client expectations.

5. Stakeholder & Client Engagement

  • Act as the primary on-site representative for Ground Control Geotechnical Solutions, engaging with clients and stakeholders.
  • Provide regular progress updates to clients and project managers, ensuring transparency and effective communication.
  • Attend site meetings and provide technical input where required.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with clients, ensuring their satisfaction with project delivery.

6. Equipment & Resource Management

  • Oversee the maintenance, inspection, and utilisation of drilling rigs and associated equipment.
  • Plan and manage the procurement and allocation of tools, consumables, and materials.
  • Identify and report equipment faults or defects, ensuring prompt repairs or replacements.
  • Ensure all equipment is safely stored and secured on-site.

What we’re looking for:Essential Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience in supervising drilling operations, including cable percussion, rotary drilling, and dynamic sampling.
  • Strong technical knowledge of ground investigation, soil mechanics, and geotechnical drilling processes.
  • Leadership experience with a proven ability to manage and motivate teams in a field-based environment.
  • Comprehensive understanding of HSE regulations, including CDM requirements and site risk management.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make quick decisions under pressure.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for reporting and client engagement.

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • NVQ Level 3 or 4 in Land Drilling or equivalent qualifications in geotechnical engineering.
  • First Aid certification, including emergency response training.
  • Experience in managing projects on large infrastructure, utilities, or civil engineering sites.
  • Familiarity with digital logging and data collection tools.
