PROJECT BACKGROUND
GGGI has a diverse portfolio of programs in developing countries around the world. These in-country programs, together with global products and services, focus on delivering results through an integrated approach of evidence-based green growth planning and implementation aligned to countries’ development priorities.
The achievement of Ecuador’s NDC targets requires a substantial increase in the volume of public and private, national and international climate finance invested in the country.
As a result, the Government of Ecuador, under the leadership of National Popular Finance Corporation (CONAFIPS), has embarked on an ambitious effort to design nature-related financial instruments.
This includes developing a taxonomy for the bioeconomy and biodiversity sectors, frameworks to mitigate financial risks related to nature, methodologies for collecting and disclosing nature-related data, as well as financial instruments for these sectors. The project also aims to establish a pipeline of biodiversity and bioeconomy projects and enterprises.
POSITION SUMMARY
GGGI is looking for an experienced Biodiversity Expert Consultant located in Quito, Ecuador. The consultant will assist in structuring biodiversity finance instruments for the Ecuadorian government, coordinating stakeholder engagement, and implementing biodiversity finance products, with technical guidance from GGGI team.
OBJECTIVES OF THE ASSIGNMENT
The Consultant will support the analysis, documentation, design, construction, and implementation of biodiversity finance instruments in Ecuador. This intervention offers specific support to CONAFIPS’ Environmental team to improve the financing for biodiversity projects.
SCOPE OF WORK

Conducting a comprehensive analysis of Ecuador’s biodiversity sector, including current financing mechanisms, key stakeholders, and funding gaps.

Providing technical expertise in the design and assessment of innovative financial instruments, with a focus on biodiversity conservation and sustainable bioeconomy.

Assisting in the development of sustainable policies, regulations, guidelines, and systems to enhance biodiversity conservation and promote sustainable practices.

Supporting the capacity-building efforts of CONAFIPS and other stakeholders in biodiversity conservation and sustainable bioeconomy.

Providing technical guidance and support in the application of new frameworks and methodologies to enhance biodiversity conservation and sustainable bioeconomy.

Ensuring alignment with international best practices and standards in biodiversity conservation and sustainable bioeconomy.
Considerations
-
All relevant technical papers, reports, and other documents prepared from the start to the end of the assignment shall be attached to the final Report.

The consultant will make the best use of both primary and secondary sources of information to develop activities defined under the contract objective.

The consultant selected must dedicate 100% of his/her time to this process. Therefore, it is forbidden to consider other consultancies during the contract period.

This position will require a near full-time on-site presence at CONAFIPS at least 4 out of 5 (80%) days of the working week.

The consultancy budget includes the costs of transportation and accommodation, and necessary resources for field studies in the selected places. This is a lump sum contract.
EXPERTISE REQUIRED

Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, environmental science, or related fields.

Postgraduate degree or specialization in areas related to biodiversity conservation, ecological economics, or related fields.
-
Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience in biodiversity conservation, including biodiversity finance, sustainable bioeconomy, and related fields.

Experience in designing and implementing biodiversity finance instruments, developing biodiversity conservation strategies, or working with international biodiversity frameworks.

Knowledge of international best practices and standards in biodiversity conservation and sustainable finance.

Prior experience in the supportive financial sector is a plus but not required.

Knowledge of the popular and solidarity financial sector will be highly valued.

Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
