DescriptionEquity and Engagement Manager (WMS 2)Washington State Board of HealthAre you passionate about advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion in public health policy?Do you excel in building connections and driving meaningful change?Join the State Board of Health as our Equity and Engagement Manager and play a pivotal role in shaping policies that protect and improve the health of all Washingtonians.As the Equity and Engagement Manager, you’ll lead transformative efforts to embed equity, diversity, and inclusion into the Board’s policies and practices. Reporting to the Deputy Director, you’ll oversee the Board’s communications and community engagement teams and work closely with partners and collaborators to:
- Advance Equity and Inclusion: Develop and maintain the Board’s Pro-Equity Anti-Racism (PEAR) plan and integrate best practices for equity, diversity, and cultural humility into organizational strategies.
- Drive Community Engagement: Create tools and strategies to enhance connections with historically marginalized communities and ensure language access and accessibility in Board initiatives.
- Champion Organizational Change: Lead efforts to address systemic inequities and bias, and foster a culture of anti-racism and inclusion.
- Support Statewide Collaboration: Represent the Board in interagency equity initiatives, including the implementation of Washington State’s Environmental Justice Law (HEAL Act).
- Provide Strategic Leadership: Mentor and guide staff, supervise the Community Engagement Coordinator and Communications Manager, and advise leadership on equity-related decisions.

Working Environment and ExpectationsThe Equity and Engagement Manager role offers a dynamic and adaptable work environment based in Tumwater, Washington, with the option to work from home or alternative locations. While much of the work is office-based, requiring extended periods at a computer, the position includes occasional statewide travel to participate in Board and Council meetings, community forums, and conferences. Travel may include overnight stays and evening commitments.This full-time role (40 hours per week) provides flexibility to adjust work hours during peak periods, such as legislative sessions or when meeting critical deadlines. Success in this role relies on the ability to respectfully collaborate with diverse communities, agencies, Tribal Nations, and leaders, demonstrating a strong commitment to culturally and linguistically appropriate engagement.Daily responsibilities involve significant collaboration with Board staff and managers, as well as engagement with partners to drive equity and inclusion initiatives. The role requires a proactive and innovative approach to addressing challenges, with a balance of independent work and effective teamwork to enhance the Board’s impact.The role involves extended periods working at a computer, but adjustments may be made to support individuals with disabilities. Please ensure any relevant experience defined below is outlined in your cover letter, resume, and/or applicant profile.Option 1: Four (4) years of experience leading programs that focus on inclusion, equity, addressing health inequities, social justice, anti-racism, cultural humility, community engagement, and/or working with historically marginalized groups.OROption 2: A bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university in public health, community health, social work, health communication, public administration, business administration, or another field with demonstrable applicability; AND two (2) years of experience leading programs or efforts that focus on inclusion, equity, addressing health inequities, social justice, anti-racism, cultural humility, community engagement, and/or working with historically marginalized groups.One of the Options above, and the following “Key Skills and Competencies”
