Location: Evanston, Illinois

This position is designated as Hybrid – Fully Flexible and expected to work from our World Headquarters office once per month to several times a week. The specific days in the office are determined by managers based on business requirements. Rotary is under the jurisdiction of Illinois employment laws; we require all employees to live within reasonable daily commuting distance to Evanston.

Overview

The Manager, External Relations, develops long-term communications strategies and manages Rotary’s external outreach and thought leadership platform. This role is primarily responsible for activating Rotary influencers and experts (Rotary’s volunteer leadership, the Rotary Representative Network, senior staff, technical experts, and others) to support mutually beneficial engagements or collaborations with external organizations and influencers (including celebrities/notables, governments and government entities, international institutions, private foundations, and other NGOs).

The primary objectives of the position are to: * Promote Rotary programs and enhance the organization’s image

  • Build and maintain public and key influencer awareness of Rotary as a thought leader and longstanding leading global humanitarian organization
  • Enhance the impact of Rotary’s programmatic/service work by building long-term, mutually beneficial connections to experts in key fields of interest for the organization;
  • Oversee ongoing training, cultivation and activation of Rotary’s network of thought leaders, speakers, and representatives
  • Support creation of external partnerships and other collaborations that help strengthen Rotary programs, offerings, and operations

You Will Have

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations or marketing required. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Effective administrative and interpersonal skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Computer literacy and knowledge of Microsoft and database software
  • Seven years public relations, media, or marketing experience with at least three years’ supervisory experience.

You Will Be Responsible For

  • Identifying opportunities for high visibility/impact Rotary engagement with influencer

organizations that can help Rotary reach new potential participants and/or increase our ability to deliver impact through our humanitarian service. Collaborates with Influencer Engagement Lead to facilitate Rotary speaking opportunities or participation in key international meetings or events.

  • Partnering with the Marketing, Strategy, Partnership, PolioPlus, Executive Communications and other teams to conceptualize and develop new outreach opportunities (collaborations, speaking engagements, PR activities, knowledge sharing, events, etc.) to help Rotary achieve its strategic objectives through engagements with external influencers.
  • As needed, supporting existing core Rotary events such as the Rotary International Convention, International Assembly or Presidential conferences/initiatives by connecting with high-profile speakers.
  • Working with Corporate Communications, PolioPlus and the Areas of Focus Managers, develop key messages, talking points and background materials as needed for Rotary Representatives, delegates or senior leaders for delivery at regional and international meetings. In consultation with Partnerships, Programs and Grants, schedule bilateral meetings with potential partners or corporate donors attending key meetings/events. Research and prepare background dossiers for all private meetings.
  • Gathering, organizing and supervising teams related to local and global outreach events such as Rotary Day at the United Nations, Rotary Day in Washington, Area of Focus outreach or events with non-governmental organizations, the diplomatic corps, and key international organizations.
  • Maintaining ongoing contact with Offices of the President, President-elect, and General Secretary, Partnerships, and Areas of Focus groups to understand and set priorities for external engagement.
  • Managing budget for External Relations and handling related expense reports.
  • Establishing strategy, oversees KPIs, and serves as liaison to Rotary’s volunteer leaders, Representative Network, speakers and technical experts. Functions as Rotary’s liaison with other organizations, including both the United Nations and its agencies, and other prominent organizations.
  • Creating speeches, briefing notes, event flyers or leave-behind materials, online content or other resources as needed. Works with social media team to ensure consistent messaging and appropriate thought leadership follow-up
  • Promoting activities and educating Rotary members about our participation in the international community through internal Rotary media. Facilitates communication between UN organizations, the Rotary Representatives, Regional Coordinators, and Rotary Action Groups as needed.
  • Preparing senior leaders and members to strengthen presentation and storytelling skills and effectively communicate Rotary’s external messages.
  • Promoting the participation of UN and other non-governmental organizations at key Rotary meetings such as the annual Convention – including roles as featured speakers, panelists, resource people and booth representatives.
  • Reporting significant activities on model Rotary efforts to senior leaders, and, where appropriate, Rotary media.
  • Providing counsel, direction, information and training to general inquiries regarding how to effectively utilize Rotary’s global network.
  • Other duties as assigned.
