The Opportunity:

  • Respond to everyday enquiries, for example location of rooms, referring to others (e.g. Helpdesk) as necessary
  • Collect, collate and respond to student feedback,
  • Opening Main Library in the mornings, occasional clearing and closing of Main Library building at night
  • React and assist in the event of incidents and emergencies e.g. floods, emergency evacuation of buildings, operation of the emergency Evacuation Lift, supervision of emergency exits
  • Participate as required in compliance activities such as fire drills and fire alarm testing.

This role is based at 40 George Square, Edinburgh in the heart of our Central Campus. There may be an occasional need to work from an alternative location to meet business needs (occasional overtime offered also). You will be part of the greater team of Facilities Assistants and there will be opportunity for overlap / skill sharing with this team.

This post is part-time (14 hours per week). Working hours are 9am-5pm with 60 minute unpaid lunchbreak in a working pattern of 2 days over 5 (Monday – Friday) to suit business need. Please note that these days may vary according to demand.

This is a fixed term 16 month contract, as 40 George Square is due a major refurbishment in 2025 (final date TBC).

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • Experience of front line public and customer service in a busy and demanding environment
  • A flexible attitude, not afraid to multi-task, take on new activities or help other team members
  • Ability to communicate effectively and with tact and diplomacy both verbally and written with a wide range of people.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions and procedures
  • Self- motivated and a team player
  • Experience of building security and safety procedures
  • Full clean driving licence – you may be expected to carry out driving duties associated with cover for other Facilities Assistants

About the Team:

The University of Edinburgh has a significant programme of estates investment underway, in both capital development and also in the infrastructure and resilience of the estate. This investment will help to ensure that the university remains at the forefront of world leading teaching, learning and research.

The Estates Department is part of the Corporate Services Group and provides a range of key activities that help the University to achieve its corporate objectives. It is an integrated centre of excellence responsible for implementing decisions related to the buildings, fabric and infrastructure of the University. It provides specialist advice to the University on strategic estates issues as well as its statutory obligations.
