Are you a skilled and passionate Fashion and Digital Textiles practitioner? Do you have experience of sharing knowledge and skills whilst maintaining safe and creative workshop facilities? If so, Birmingham City University’s, Art, Design, and Media Faculty have an exciting opportunity for you to join our technical team as a technician in soft materials.
There is a strong emphasis on skill sharing so we are looking for someone with a broad range of skills who can support and cover in all our workshops, but our Digital textiles provision will be the main area of concentration for this role.
The digital print facilities include a Mimaki TX300P-1800 pigment printer, two Epson sublimation printers, and an Epson Direct to Garment printer. In embroidery, we are the first university in the country to have a Coloreel thread dye printer that works with a ZSK industrial Embroidery machine along with 6 Brother Digital embroidery machines. All our workshops provide a mixture of hand and traditional making processes alongside the digital.
The successful applicant will work under the direction of a Fashion and Textiles technical supervisor and the Technical Manager to undertake the following responsibilities.
- Operate specialist equipment and processes in a range of technical facilities.
- Collaborate with technical and teaching staff to establish which resources are supported at the different stages of the academic year.
- Assist in the preparation and delivery of demonstrations and share your skills and expertise with students as individuals and in groups.
- Undertake general and specific housekeeping tasks including screen washing and preparation.
- Create and regularly reviewing health and safety documentation and standard operating procedures.
- Ensure students adopt the highest standards of health and safety and nurture a healthy working environment and attitude.
- Promote sustainable resources and practices.
- Assist in processing and recording the distribution of materials and resources.
- Support the teaching and technical team with trade and promotional events, open days, exhibitions and visits.
- Undertake personal development and skills building.
- Work to the universities core values and put the students at the heart of what you do.
Qualified to HND level or above or with equivalent industry experience we are looking for someone with Textiles Digital printing experience.
Essential Skills and experience
- Digital Textiles printing- operation, maintenance, and postproduction processing.
- Digital skills in Photoshop, Illustrator, Microsoft software and Asset and record keeping software.
- Adaptable digital machine skills to support digital embroidery, and digital weave.
A working knowledge in at least two of the following areas with a willingness to learn and develop in all the technical disciplines.
- Practical experience in screen printing, embroidery, weave or knitting.
- A passion for recycling, sustainable fashion, and current environmental issues.
- A practical knowledge of garment construction using industrial sewing equipment.
- A working knowledge of hand embroidery techniques.
- Knowledge of weaving and machine knitting processes.
Skills desirable but not essential to the job
- Experience in technical roles in further and/or higher education.
- Certified First Aider
- Any qualification in Health and Safety
- Experience in using Wilcom and/or Scotweave software.
