The First Nations National Guardians Network (NGN) is a nonprofit fostering stewardship and nationhood through First Nations Guardians initiatives. NGN is the first-ever Indigenous-led national stewardship network in the world. Committed to empowering Guardians with consistent funding, training, and networking, NGN is grounded in Indigenous knowledge and values. Guardians engage in vital land and water stewardship, e.g. managing wildfires, monitoring climate impacts, restoring ecosystems, and strengthening cultural and language revitalization. NGN supports this crucial work by offering streamlined access to funds and investments, shaping applications based on Guardians’ lived experiences and ensuring thriving programs for First Nations.

SUMMARY

Reporting to the Director of Finance, the individual will play an instrumental part in supporting the financial core of NGN. Responsibilities include managing budgets, tracking fund utilization, and contributing to impactful financial reporting that drives decision-making. This role involves active participation in a dynamic team committed to advancing First Nation stewardship initiatives from coast to coast to coast.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND REQUIREMENTS

Responsibilities:

  • Financial Support: Assist in managing and overseeing NGN budgets, payables and receivables, expense claims, bank reconciliations, ensuring funds are efficiently allocated and utilized.
  • Funding Program Assistance: Aid in tracking and optimizing fund utilization for redistribution to First Nations, ensuring compliance and meeting reporting requirements.
  • Financial Reporting Assistance: Support the creation of financial reports and assisting in analysis to aid decision-making processes for NGN.
  • Audit Preparation Support: Assist in preparing NGN for annual audits, ensuring accuracy, transparency, and compliance with regulatory standards and donor requirements.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate closely with the Director of Finance and others to align financial strategies with organizational objectives.
  • Risk Management Assistance: Aid in identifying and mitigating financial risks and implementing necessary controls and measures to safeguard financial assets.
  • Team Support: Help the remote NGN team, contributing to a collaborative and goal-oriented environment focused on achieving financial management objectives.
  • Travel: Willingness to travel at least 4 times a year for work-related events, meetings, or conferences.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field is preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience in financial management or a similar role, preferably within the nonprofit sector.
  • Understanding of financial principles, budgeting, and reporting.
  • Familiarity with managing Federal Contribution Agreements or similar is advantageous.
  • Proficiency in financial software and tools.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with diverse recipients, vendors, funders and others.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a remote work environment.
  • Willing to support occasional travel (approximately eight times a year) for work-related events.
  • Successful criminal records check.
