Our Whiteshell (WL) location is looking for Firefighters to join our team! Do you want to work in an environment where you will be responsible for providing safe and efficient service associated with the inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire protection equipment? Can you see yourself responding to structural and forest fires, hazardous materials incidents, high-angle and confined space emergencies, medical responses, auto incidents, and other such emergencies? - Providing Emergency Response.
- Driving and operating firefighting vehicles and equipment.
- Participating in fire prevention activities with respect to the protection of personnel and property.
- Inspecting buildings for fire hazards and compliance with fire prevention.
- Performing routine inspections and maintenance of fire department equipment and apparatus.
- Assisting with the inspection, testing and maintenance of fire protection systems, as per applicable codes and standards.
- Assisting with updating and reviewing pre-incident plans.
- Reviewing all departmental policies, procedures and pre-incident plans regularly, as directed by Management.
- Participating in fire drills and demonstrations of firefighting techniques.
- Driving and operating firefighting vehicles and equipment.
- Participating in the training program to meet departmental regulations.
- Other duties as assigned by your manager.
What we are looking for:
- Education
- Must possess a grade 12 high school diploma or equivalent.
- Post-secondary diploma in a Firefighter Education Training Program.
- NFPA 1001 Level I, including NFPA 472 Operations required; preference given to NFPA 1001 Level II.
- Valid Standard First Aid and CPR certificates.
- Possess a valid Manitoba Class 4 license with air endorsement or equivalent.
- NFPA 1002 – Driver operator standard an asset.
- NFPA 1006 – High angle and confined space technical rescuer certification an asset.
- NFPA 1051 – Wildland firefighter standard or wildland-urban interface for structural firefighters an asset.
- Experience
- Firefighting experience will be considered an asset.
- Pump operations and emergency vehicle driving.
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Meet the minimum departmental medical and physical requirements.
- Maintain the knowledge, skills to complete the normal daily duties of an industrial firefighter including but not limited to assisting with the inspection, testing and maintenance of fire protection systems.
- Successfully complete the firefighter training program.
- Effectively communicate using a 2-way portable radio.
- Utilize 3-way communication.
- Must be able to follow instructions, maintain composure, and work in highly stressful situations.
- Ability to move toward the source of a fire using knowledge of types of fires, construction design, and building materials.
- Use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or problem approaches.
- Ability to recognize critical incident stress.
- Communicate effectively both written and orally.
- Represent the Fire Department in special events related to fire protection.
- Work a continuous rotating shift schedule that includes nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Security Clearance Eligibility Required
- Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat’s “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”
Working Conditions:
- Working outdoors for extended periods in adverse weather conditions under extremely physically demanding conditions. Physical demands include extended periods of standing and walking while wearing prescribed equipment (i.e. bunker gear, SCBA, station uniform).
- Participating in physical training activities to maintain the required level of physical fitness.
- Performing physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, bending, and handling materials.
- We have a compressed work week, which consists of a four-day work week and ten hours a day – starting at 6 am.
