Details:Mission and objectives:The Centre for Health Science and Law is a non-profit health advocacy organization focusing on food issues, especially nutrition. Our work is divided between Canadian federal regulation reform work, e.g., food and alcohol labelling, advertising to children, pesticide and chemical safety, food security (poverty/inequality), prohibiting the commercial advertising & promotion of breast-milk substitutes, reducing sodium and trans fat in the food supply, science-based dietary guidance, and promoting the use of conflict of interest safeguards in public-interest and public-policy activities. We publish a newsletter distributed mainly in Canada, though it has been on hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic. CHSL’s has been involved in extensive and diverse advocacy related to international standard-setting at the Codex Alimentarius Commission, the World Health Organization, the UN Human Rights Council (including related to treaties on business and human rights, the right to development, and children’s rights). The guiding mission of CHSL work is to improve public health and equity in Canada and internationally.Context:CHSL is part of several international networks of civil society organizations that do health and children’s rights public interest advocacy fueled by foundation grants. This work should not be funded by commercial organizations or foundations and not by discretionary government grants. We are seeking support from online volunteers that will help us identify feasible foundation opportunities for research relating to improving public health, especially related to food and nutrition, in global fora and in Sub-Saharan Africa. The work will be entirely online and there is no need to travel. The research will help locate funds to carry out international development research related to public health goals, particularly in global and Sub-Saharan Africa standard-setting work.Task type:ResearchTask description:The volunteers will work independently after the assignment is described and discussed. The volunteer will have control of their hours except for occasional Zoom or WhatsApp meetings that will be at mutually agreed times. The main output will be an Excel or GoogleSheets spreadsheet of foundation names, contact information, URL, application deadlines, funding priorities, and other application-relevant information. Presumably, this will include 10-50 prospects.Requirements:The online volunteer should be an experienced fundraiser with demonstrated success, with access to databases of grant-giving foundations with international mandates. We can have biweekly update meetings by WhatsApp and/or Zoom. The work product will be a spreadsheet of foundation prospects for which we meet threshold eligibility requirements. The volunteer may advise on draft letters of interest and strategies for approaching foundations. The volunteer will not submit applications or letters of interest on our behalf. A dedication to public interest advocacy is preferred.Work Hours: 6 – 10
