The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a hard-working, caring, and collaborative individual to serve as a Graduate Assistant for the Carolina Covenant Scholars Program and Kessler Scholars Programs within the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid. The Carolina Covenant is UNC-Chapel Hill’s groundbreaking program for low-income students administered out of The Office of Scholarships and Student Aid. Launched in 2004, the Covenant offers a debt-free path to graduation through a combination of grants, scholarships, and work-study – no loans. The Covenant also offers academic, career, and well-being support to help Covenant Scholars thrive at Carolina and beyond. More than a financial aid package, the Covenant is a university-wide network of support including dozens of faculty and staff mentors, high-impact liaisons situated strategically across the campus, and friends of the Covenant around every corner. The Carolina Covenant has dramatically improved on-time graduation among the University’s lowest-income students, transforming individual lives and building a stronger Carolina.The Kessler Scholars Program at UNC Chapel Hill brings rural, first-generation students from North Carolina with demonstrated financial need together for cohort-based community events, service, and opportunities for academic, professional, and personal connections. Kessler Scholars build a sense of belonging and shared identity and create networks that will last well beyond their four years on campus. Kessler Scholars participate in Summer Bridge, work with a dedicated mentor, and engage in curated curricular and co-curricular opportunities to participate in community service, leadership development, and social events to build lasting friendships and a network of connections.The successful candidate will support leaders within the Carolina Covenant and Kessler Scholars Programs with implementing the overarching strategies for the programs. This selected candidate will engage in frequent and meaningful communication with students and alumni, participate in data collection and organization about student and alumni experiences, lead programs, events, meetings and other gatherings, and have opportunities for networking across the UNC campus community. The selected candidate will play a key role in meeting the ambitious goals of key student success initiatives.The Graduate Assistant will also engage in professional development regarding basic concepts of financial aid, co-curricular academic and pre-professional experiences for students, and pathways in the field of higher education. The Graduate Assistant will also use own experiences and knowledge to identify opportunities within the programs’ current efforts and strategies for student success within the Carolina Covenant and Kessler Scholars programs.
Minimum Education and Experience RequirementsBachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and ExperienceExcellent written and oral communication skills is required. Also important is the ability to think creatively and critically. The selected candidates must also have past knowledge demonstrating superior interpersonal skills, attention to detail and, organizational skills. Must possess ability to research individual issues and adjust processes to address special individual concerns while maintaining a calm, pleasant, and helpful disposition.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and ExperienceExperience with social media and creative digital content management, event planning, and student and professional organization leadership is strongly preferred, as is experience with Adobe, Instagram, and Canva, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Bachelor’s degree and enrollment in a graduate school academic program is highly preferred.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Campus Security Authority ResponsibilitiesThis position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
