The Heads of Subject are entrusted with providing exemplary leadership and strategic direction to achieve outstanding student outcomes, ensuring quality assurance and enhancement endorsed by the QAA, and fostering curriculum innovation through robust collaboration with the University and the broader network.
In this capacity, you will oversee and guide our academic team, operating under the supervision of the Head of Curriculum and Progression. Your role entails close collaboration with senior peers within and beyond the Centre, with a primary responsibility for meeting the University’s stipulated progression rates.
This position demands full-time engagement and a physical presence at the center, where, as the Head of Business, Economics, Law, and Social Sciences (BELSS), among other duties, you will mentor newer and junior colleagues to uphold high academic standards. Additionally, you will monitor the workload of variable tutors across different days, step in to teach as needed (to cover sickness or vacancy gaps), facilitate discussions with the university regarding new pathway opportunities, and participate in impromptu events such as agent and parent visits. Your involvement in these activities is vital for ensuring a comprehensive understanding of our academic and pastoral operations, leaving a lasting positive impression on all stakeholders.
ABOUT THE ROLE
- Communicate our vision to drive forward continuous improvement and enable the Centre to achieve the aspirational targets for student outcomes.
- Communicate our vision for the development of the academic partnership with the host university, including appropriate articulation routes that maximise opportunities for recruitment to the college.
- Communicate our vision for the development of programme pathways to meet the overall strategic aims of the Centre as an effective, attractive, and high-quality pathway to UK HE.
- Contribute to planning and development including human resources; academic development; learning, teaching and assessment; and academic quality assurance and enhancement, as part of the Centre Leadership Team (CLT).
- Attend and actively contribute to relevant University partnership Boards and Committees, work with university colleagues through approved liaison points and report regularly on these through the deliberative and management structures.
- Identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats and identify appropriate actions to solve problems and enhance delivery with the other Heads of Subject and the Senior Management Team.
- Provide effective and efficient academic management and co-ordination of staff resources across the academic and progression support teams in the ISC, working closely with the other Heads of Subject and the Senior Management Team.
- Ensure that the academic team meet key minimum expectations/compliance in their duties and provide feedback on their performance
- Taking responsibility for academic standards, the quality of learning opportunities, the accuracy and completeness of published information, ensuring that they are managed appropriately and in accordance with the policies and procedures of the centre.
- Contribute to ensuring that the Centre is fully compliant with Study Group’s, Surrey University’s and relevant external agencies’ quality frameworks, policies, procedures, and codes of practice.
- Produce reports, analysis and evaluation for all internal and external scrutiny processes as directed by the Head of Curriculum and Progression.
- Work closely with the Head of Student Experience and their function heads to ensure that timetables and assessment schedules are delivered effectively, staff are recruited compliantly, and Professional Services (PS) and Academic staff work together as one team.
- To teach up to 10 hours across modules within pathway.
- Work closely with the other Heads of Subject and academic staff to ensure that appropriate, current and relevant subject, academic skills and language development are integrated and embedded in the programme.
- Oversee the development and maintenance of the Centre’s virtual learning environment (VLE).
- Support a cost conscious working environment, at the same time as delivering a quality service and experience to students.
- Contribute to ensuring that the Centre is compliant in relation to Safeguarding responsibilities and staff across the Centre are aware of their obligations/requirements.
- Develop close and effective working relations with key partners within University of Surrey, including Pathway Tutors.
ABOUT YOU
- A bachelor’s degree and a post graduate qualification.
- Experience of providing leadership in a complex multi-disciplinary environment, with evidence of success.
- Experience of providing feedback to another person about their performance, which achieved a positive improvement.
- Experience of HR duties, such as delivering training and taking part in the recruitment process.
- Ability to delegate activities set deadlines and take responsibility for overseeing their successful completion to meet challenging deadlines.
- Experience of working with international students and an understanding of welfare, well-being and cultural issues which may arise.
- Experience of data management and interpretation, and quality assurance.
- Experience of working across, up and down an organisation as well as with external partners.
- A sound understanding of UK higher education and experience. Strong team-working skills and experience of team development.
- Knowledge of the needs of international students and experience of working with international students.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to communicate issues to a wide audience.
- Flexibility and willingness to work under pressure to deadlines
- Sound IT skills including MS Office and MS Excel and experience of working with databases.
