Department Overview

Taxation is responsible for developing and delivering corporate direct and indirect tax services on an enterprise-wide basis for TD Bank Financial Group (TD).

Job Requirements

  • An undergraduate degree, preferably in accounting, business or finance
  • Completion of CPA In-Depth GST/HST course
  • A minimum of 8 years of commodity tax experience. Experience working with banks, trust companies, investment dealers, asset management companies, insurance companies or leasing companies would be an asset

Job Details

The Head of Indirect Tax is responsible for leading the Canadian indirect tax function at TD. In particular, the individual will oversee all planning and tax technical functions with respect to federal goods & services tax (GST), harmonized sales tax (HST), and provincial sales tax (for the three non-harmonized provinces) for the Bank and its subsidiaries.

  • Review and ensure the accurate and timely completion of the annual GST return and quarterly installment payments for the Bank and its subsidiaries
  • Provide oversight of the input tax credit (ITC) allocation methodology and ITC rates
  • Coordinate the preparation of and the review the GST returns for the Bank’s largest domestic subsidiaries
  • Assist in the development of new/enhanced commodity tax reporting systems/policies, procedures and controls to continuously improve compliance requirements
  • Act as a commodity tax subject matter expert by providing advice and counsel to the business units on commodity tax implications of new products and services to ensure that the Bank and its subsidiaries meet their compliance obligations
  • Build relationships with the business units in order to better understand business issues and proactively identify opportunities for tax savings and recoveries
  • Assist in reviewing proposed intercompany transactions and transactions with external suppliers to ensure the transactions comply with applicable tax laws
  • Work with outside counsel to conduct research and prepare detailed technical analysis, supported by statute and precedents, to defend the Bank’s tax positions
  • Manage all tax audits
  • Assist senior Tax Department leadership in influencing federal and provincial government policies on sales tax matters by actively participating in industry sponsored initiatives such as those sponsored by the Canadian Bankers Association, Investment Funds Institute of Canada and Tax Executives Institute
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of GST, HST and PST legislation, jurisprudence and government assessing practices to understand the potential impact to the Bank’s operations and to proactively communicate these changes to the business units through email correspondence, one-on-one discussions or group meetings/presentations
  • Provide tax technical training to finance staff to increase their knowledge base in order to enhance the commodity tax compliance process
  • Manage and develop junior staff
