Job Summary
The High-Performance Compute Core Manager will be responsible for establishing the overall architecture, direction, and vision for UCSF’s research compute service offering within the Academic Research Services (ARS) Team, while working closely with and in the UCSF Cores. The incumbent in this position will work with the faculty, business partners and current research compute administrators to outline objectives, goals, and drive towards creating a unified platform that meets the needs of the research mission. They will be required to collaboratively work with several administrative teams, and provide direction as well as delegate assignments to subordinate leads, and staff.
They are responsible for managing, preparing, administering, and directing resources that directly support the ARS-HPC Core systems. Involved in developing, modifying, and executing policies that affect immediate operation(s) and may also have campus-wide, medical center, or Office of the President effect. Has full management responsibility for budgets, costs, methods, hardware decisions, and personnel-related actions. Recommends operational policies and procedures for their team that align with ARS departmental practices. Receives assignments in the form of objectives and determines how to best use resources to meet schedules and goals. Reviews and approves recommendations for growth and core support. Guides subordinates to achieve goals following established strategies and policies.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% – 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.
For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description
This position will be housed within the Central IT, which provides architecture, infrastructure, network, security, analytics, integration, and application support services and is essential to the organization’s ability to support growth, mitigate security risk, and manage, store, and share sensitive information. The position will be specifically housed within the Academic Research Systems team, reporting to the Associate CIO for Research. This team is focused on providing research IT services across UCSF.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
- Typically 2-5 years of experience managing an information technology organization.
- Uses and applies applications of Information Technology theories and concepts to manage and provide solutions.
- Requires a broad working knowledge of the applications programming development function – specific to HPC configurations.
- Requires the ability to gather, organize, and analyze data in the completion of assignments.
- Possesses skills necessary to accomplish department/section objectives and address related problems and issues effectively.
- Thorough knowledge of the subject area sufficient for strategic planning, technology assessment, and direction.
- Demonstrated skill in managing technical staff.
- Experience in the management of ongoing technology infrastructure acquisition and expansion, including the identification and integration of suitable emerging technologies specifically those around High Performance Computing.
- Thorough knowledge of technical concepts and basic operating principles of data communications, computer hardware, vendor IT products, and software.
- Ability to understand the process involved in adapting, integrating, and modifying existing programs or vendor-supplied products for use within the technical environment.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively present technical topics to individuals and groups with potentially varied levels of technical sophistication.
- Strong knowledge and understanding of service delivery principles.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experienced in leading change management activities and managing their impact across the unit or department.
- Experience in analyzing buy vs. build procurement for products for effective and efficient technology use.
