Please direct any accommodation requests to our recruitment team.Primary functionLAO is seeking an Indigenous Relations Advisor for the Indigenous Services Department (ISD).This position is responsible for building and maintaining meaningful and respectful relationships with First Nation, Métis and Inuit communities in Ontario, by developing and implementing outreach strategies, initiatives, and working on a holistic approach to services for Indigenous clients.Home Location: Province WideKey accountabilitiesEnsuring processes are in place to identify and engage with communities of interest, including Indigenous communities and organizations;
Developing and implementing engagement strategies and initiatives to build and maintain meaningful relationships with First Nation, Métis and Inuit communities and organizations;
Leading Indigenous advisory and committees meetings
Attending key events to promote LAO services and develop relationships with communities of interest and Indigenous organizations;
Implementing engagement and decision-making processes with Indigenous communities;
Responding to incidents, concerns, and feedback from communities of interest;
Engaging and communicating with a wide array of client groups and other audiences – including, but not limited to, First Nation, Métis, and Inuit client groups and/or communities, government agencies, funders, and the judiciary;
Advising, supporting, and working closely with the External Relations Department to assist LAO in maintaining strong external relationships and forging new relationships with Indigenous communities, services providers, and clients;
Ensuring internal and external relationships and interactions are valuable and beneficial to LAO’s clients and support LAO’s mandate and objectives;
Working on a holistic approach to services for Indigenous clients and making recommendations for services for Indigenous peoples and communities;
Supporting organizational changes within LAO;
Working collaboratively with other LAO departments, including the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee and department, to support the development of programs, practices, and communications within LAO that progress equity, diversity, inclusion, and reconciliation;Required skills & experienceThe ideal candidate must identify as First Nation, Inuit and/or Métis, and possess the following skills and experience:Cultural competence and demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Indigenous cultures, histories, and current realities;
Knowledge of relevant treaties, agreements, and legal frameworks related to Indigenous rights;
Extensive knowledge and understanding of current Indigenous socio-economic issues and political structures and processes
Knowledge of the policies, provincial and federal regulations and legislation affecting Indigenous peoples of Ontario
Experience working with Indigenous communities and organizations;
Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategies and programs that promote cultural understanding and engagement;
Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with internal and external audiences;
Strong written communication skills with he ability to prepare a variety of correspondence to different audiences;
Ability to speak to large groups of external audiences;
Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment;
