The duration of the internship is for three (3) months with a possibility of extension to six (6) months. The internship is UNPAID and may be either full-time or part-time. It should be noted that full-time internship working hours are 35 hours per week, while part-time internship working hours are 20 hours per week. The internship will be undertaken either remotely outside the duty station or in a hybrid working arrangement at the UN Premise, New York, United States. A full-time internship is for an initial period of two months, and a part-time internship is for an initial four months. Internships may be extended up to a maximum of six months, depending on the needs of the Division. Organizational Setting and Reporting: The Internship is located in the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) Section of the Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI) in the Department of Peace Operations (DPO). The DDR Section (DDRS) provides planning and operational support to DDR programmes and community violence reduction in the following peacekeeping operations: United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU). The Section also assists Special Political Missions as well as non-mission settings with planning for DDR and associated processes. Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI) was established in 2007 to strengthen the links and coordinate the Department’s activities in the areas of police, justice and corrections, mine action, the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration of ex-combatants and security sector reform. Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Intern for Security Institutions will be responsible, among others, for: •Coordinate with the Information Management Unit (IMU/DPPA-DPO) and the DDR/IT Officers in CAR and DRC the development of the DDR Information Management System (IMS); •Carry out current state analysis of existing DDR databases, including good best practices and identify gaps by conducting Gap analysis; •Conduct requirements gathering sessions with all project stakeholders; •Visualize requirements by designing UML diagrams such as use case diagram, class diagram, activity diagram and other relevant diagrams; •Create business process diagram to represent business process workflows in adherence to Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) standard; •Create Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) to represent relationships between various entities; •Conduct current state and future state analysis; •Carry out analysis of technologies available outside DPO, i.e. in the UN Agencies, Funds and Programmes as well as in the Private Sectors; •Define with (IMU/DPPA-DPO) and the DDR/IT Officers the project workflow; •Draft in close coordination with (IMU/DPPA-DPO) and the DDR/IT Officers the Functional Requirement Document for the development of the DDR/IMS, as well as any other relevant documents; •Provide value added advice to ensure proper codification and confidentiality of DDR data, including establishing security protocols, defining and implementing access control mechanisms to all DDR data – create and maintain user profiles and roles, assign privileges based on defined parameters approved by the DDR Section Chief; •Develop a User-guide and train relevant staff in the use of the DDR/IMS, define operational procedures and assist with DDR/IMS applications and report generation, troubleshoot accordingly, etc.; •Performing other duties as requested by the supervisor.Qualifications/special skillsApplicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme in Computer Science (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme in Computer Science (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of IT study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Good knowledge of business/system analysis, requirements gathering and converting business requirements to technical requirements. Good knowledge of JAD Sessions, SDLC (System Design Life Cycle) and Gap analysis. Good knowledge of Unified Modeling Language (UML) and Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN).LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage.
