What you’ll doThe is looking for a tourism or outdoor recreation professional to teach TOUR 275 – Tourism and the Sustainable Development Goals. TOUR 275 is an elective within the Tourism Management and Outdoor Recreation Management programs.This course is designed to introduce students to tourism concepts in sustainable development and provide opportunities to address sustainability challenges in a global context, learning how both business and personal actions relate to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In addition, this course is designed to build eco-literacy, helping students acquire in-depth knowledge of their home environment with the premise that forming a connection to the natural world leads to deeper understanding and caring, and leading ultimately towards environmental and social issue actions at the local to global levels.Course outline and access to materials is provided but it is expected that the instructor will continue to build on existing course content to include topical and relevant resources, experiences, and examples. The instructor will also meet with faculty who teach complementary courses to ensure progression of student learning.
What you’ll bringQualificationsRequired:
- Masters in Tourism Management, Geography, Resource Management, Sciences, or related fields.
- Teaching experience at the post-secondary level.
Preferred:
- PhD in related field.
- Relevant adult education training and/or qualifications such as the Provincial Instructors Diploma Instructional Skills Workshops.
Industry Experiences and CompetenciesRequired:
- Applied tourism industry or outdoor recreation experience, or practical experience in a related field.
- Applied experience and comprehensive knowledge of environmental and sustainability policy and planning and how they impact outdoor recreation and tourism businesses.
- Applied experience and comprehensive knowledge of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and how they impact tourism businesses.
- The ability to engage students through a combination of theoretical content based and applied teaching methods.
Preferred:
- Considerable applied experience at a management level in tourism planning and sustainability, at a community, regional, destination or higher level.
- A record of teaching excellence at the post-secondary level.
- Publication(s) on a relevant topic(s) or in related field(s).
