Job description

The position is located in the International Tax and Development Cooperation Branch (ITDCB) of the Financing for Sustainable Development Office (FSDO) in the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs. The internship position is for a minimum of two months with an opportunity for extension up to a maximum of six months, depending on the needs of the department. The start date is June 2025, though applicants interested in taking up the internship during the summer period in 2025 are also encouraged to apply. The intern will support the work of the Capacity Development Unit in ITDCB/FSDO. The intern will support the Capacity Development Unit staff in implementing a capacity development programme on financing for sustainable development, in particular issues related to international tax cooperation and domestic resource mobilization, aimed at strengthening the capacity of relevant authorities in developing countries. Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following tasks in support of the Branch’s work: -Assists in drafting, reviewing and preparing papers, presentations including in PowerPoint format, studies, reports, publications and any other relevant documents; -Attends, takes notes and summarizes conferences, and in-person and virtual meetings; -Assists during in-person and virtual meetings, workshops and outreach organized by FSDO; -Conducts research, compiles and analyzes information on various tax matters such as double tax treaties, transfer pricing, tax base erosion and profit shifting (BEPS), taxation in a digitalized and globalized economy, the relationship between tax, trade and investment agreements, taxation of the extractives industries, environmental taxation, increasing tax transparency, avoidance and resolution of tax disputes, indirect taxation (e.g., VAT), health taxes, wealth taxation, and tax-related environmental, social and governance issues, especially (in the case of all these topics) as they affect countries’ sustainable development; -Assists in collecting data for analyses and report of workshop/training/meetings surveys, and in summarizing related quantitative and qualitative data for reports on key findings of these events carried out by FSDO; -Assists in collecting data for the monitoring, review, reporting and evaluation of a multi-donor project, alongside other projects carried out by ITDCB/FSDO; -Supports ITDCB’s communications and outreach strategies (e.g., social media posts, fliers, infographics) for meetings, workshops and trainings; -Prepares and provides input(s) for briefing notes, talking points, speeches and similar materials for senior UN officials; -Follows relevant in-person and virtual intergovernmental meetings of the General Assembly (GA) and Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), and prepares draft summaries on the main outcomes; -Performs any other ad hoc assignments as required to support the work of the Branch.Qualifications/special skillsApplicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the Internship Programme. Knowledge of French or any of the official languages of the UN is an asset.Additional InformationThis internship is designed to be full time and in-person but can be adjusted based on the needs of the successful candidate.Intern Specific textInterns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
