Duties and Responsibilities
The Intern will support the optimal delivery of the communications function within OSAA through a wide range of tasks, including the drafting of content, production of multimedia assets, research for materials, development or provision of logistical support during special events, provision of substantive and operational support during monitoring and evaluation exercises for communication activities, etc.
The Office communicates results through its official website and social media accounts on X, formerly Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn in English. Therefore, the Intern will also discharge functions related to the maintenance and administration of these communication outlets under the direct supervision of a Public Information Officer and the overall supervision of a Senior Programme Management Officer.
The thematic focus of the Intern’s duties aligns with OSAA’s mandate within the UN Secretariat, which is to enhance international support for Africa’s development and security, assist the Secretary-General in coordinating the UN’s support to Africa, facilitate inter-governmental deliberations on Africa at the global level and establish a monitoring mechanism for commitments on Africa’s development.
OSAA supports the UN General Assembly and the UN Economic and Social Council in their deliberations on Africa while coordinating the preparation of Africa-related reports and inputs. The Office also convenes and chairs the Interdepartmental Task Force on African Affairs (IDTFAA) and provides global advocacy support for the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD).
The Intern will, therefore, perform other related duties centred on these activities.
Qualifications/special skills
To qualify for the United Nations Headquarters Secretariat Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
a) Be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent or higher such as Master’s degree or equivalent, Ph.D. or postgraduate degree);
b) Be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
(c) subject to review on a case-by-case basis, applicants within a few years from graduation who could not apply earlier and who are in an early stage of their careers; as a first-time entry into the workforce; are changing careers or due to compelling family circumstances.
No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (Bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or PhD Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD Programme.
Interested candidates must be computer literate in standard software applications
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required; and knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
