The Office for Public Information and Communication provides objective, accurate and timely information about the IAEA and nuclear developments that fosters public understanding of the IAEA’s global roles. It also provides advice to the Director General on relations with the media and organizes press briefings. The Office coordinates the communication activities for the rest of the house and assists in the media aspects of major IAEA events and conferences.
The Media, Multimedia and Public Outreach Section has corporate responsibility for relations with the media and the public, as well as for producing audio and video materials to promote the IAEA’s activities.
Main Purpose:
The main purpose of the internship is to provide the holder with an opportunity to gain practical work experience in an international organization. The training provided should benefit the intern and the divisional programme in which he/she works.
Functions / Key Results Expected:
- Support the daily production of the Internal News Review by keeping abreast of news in general and alerting Press Officers to matters of interest.
- Scan multilingual news, starting in the afternoon and concluding in the morning under time pressure to meet delivery deadlines.
- Further support the production of the Internal News Review, including scanning specific online resources for news items about the IAEA, nuclear matters and other issues affecting the IAEA and compiling these into a package under the supervision and guidance of a Press Officer for eventual delivery to the Director General.
- Provide special news packages when requested, for example, following Board of Governors’ meetings.
- Undertake research and take on writing assignments.
- Transcribe Director General press conferences and interviews, sometimes under time pressure.
- Assist in preparations for and provide support to the Press Office during Board of Governors’ meetings and the IAEA General Conference, for example, supporting research and distribution tasks to enable timely media access to information.
- Assist in collecting statistics about the Section’s work and contribute to the analysis of its impact.
- Perform other tasks as required.
- University degree in Journalism, International Relations, or relevant discipline.
- Knowledge of MS Excel, Word, Adobe PDF.
- Knowledge of non-proliferation, nuclear power, energy or climate change issues an asset.
- Experience in writing and editing press releases, news features and video scripts an asset.
- General Knowledge of the United Nations System.
- Knowledge of international politics, as well as public information and communication.
