The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) is a United Nations entity established in 1968 to support countries worldwide in preventing crime and facilitating criminal justice. UNICRI is mandated to assist intergovernmental, governmental and non-governmental organizations in formulating and implementing improved policies in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. UNICRI’ ‘s goals are: – to advance understanding of crime-related problems; – to foster just and efficient criminal justice systems; – to support the respect of international instruments and other standards; – to facilitate international law enforcement cooperation and judicial assistance. This position is located within UNICRI Crime and Justice Programme, supporting the implementation of projects managed from both UNICRI’s HQ in Turin and its project Office in Geneva. Under the general supervision of relevant Programme Managers, the incumbent will support research activities in two main areas of work, namely: 1) creating knowledge on criminal investigations of Intellectual Property Crimes, and 2) identifying and assessing successful methods for rehabilitation of prisoners. The internship is for an initial period of 2 months, starting, preferably in November 2024, with an opportunity for an extension up to a total period of six months. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours), under the supervision of a staff member managing the programme, project or unit to which they are assigned in both UNICRI HQ in Turin and UNICRI Office in Geneva. Applicants to this Internship position will be requested to undertake the internship remotely in telecommuting. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely and must have all necessary arrangements and equipment (including a computer and internet connection) to perform assignments in teleworking.Qualifications/special skillsApplicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Preferable fields of study: law, political sciences, psychology or other related fields. Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Previous experience in crime prevention and criminal justice, including with Intellectual Property Rights and/or rehabilitation of prisoners is desirable.LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Fluency in Italian is highly desirable. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage.
