ANTICIPATED HIRING RANGE: $3,338 – $3,500

  • However, offer amount will be commensurate with candidate’s experience, education, skills, and training.

CSU CLASSIFICATION SALARY RANGE: $3,338 – $5,549

POSITION PURPOSE: Under direct supervision of the Chief Diversity Officer, the Tribal Liaison plays a critical role in training to assist with fostering relationships and facilitating collaboration between the university and tribal communities. With time in the role, this position will assist with serving as a key point of contact for tribal governments, organizations, and individuals, ensuring effective communication, cultural sensitivity, and mutually beneficial partnerships. The Tribal Liaison serves as a campus ambassador to all Native Nations and Indigenous Peoples, both federally recognized and non-federally recognized American Indian and Alaska Native Tribes, as well as Native Hawaiian Organizations.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Tribal Relations & Engagement

  • Participate in training to learn to assist with outreach efforts to connect the university with local tribes, including both federally recognized and non-federally recognized American Indian and Alaska Native Tribes, and Native Hawaiian Organizations.
  • Assist Chief Diversity Officer with communication between tribal governments, leaders, and tribal community members, building relationships and facilitating collaboration with the university.
  • In coordination with the Chief Diversity Officer, assist with tribal governments, leaders, and community members to understand their needs, concerns, and aspirations, and identify opportunities for partnership with CSUB.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Diversity Officer & Special Assistant on issues impacting Native American tribes and communities, President’s Native American Advisory Council, and CSU Native American Steering Committee to assist in addressing key challenges and promoting inclusivity.

Advocacy & Outreach

  • Assist with advocating for the needs and interests of tribal communities within the university, ensuring their perspectives are considered in decision-making processes and policies.
  • Assist with organizing and participating in relevant tribal events, conferences, and meetings to represent CSUB and build relationships with tribal communities.
  • Assist with developing and implementing outreach strategies to attract and retain Native American students at CSUB, collaborating with admissions, student services, and other relevant departments.
  • Assist with coordinating cultural events, workshops, and educational programs on campus to promote awareness and understanding of Native American cultures, histories, and contemporary issues.

Resource & Knowledge Sharing

  • Stay informed about tribal policies, legislation, and issues affecting Native American communities at local, state, and national levels, and disseminate relevant information to the university community.
  • Learn to provide resources and information to CSUB faculty, staff, and students regarding Native American cultures, histories, traditions, and protocols, fostering cultural competency and respect.
  • Assist with collaborating with CSUB departments to integrate tribal perspectives and content into relevant academic programs and curricula.

Reporting & Collaboration

  • Prepare regular reports on tribal engagement activities, progress, and outcomes to share with university administration, tribal partners, and relevant committees.
  • Assis with collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, such as tribal liaisons from other institutions, governmental agencies, and community organizations, to foster collaboration and share best practices.
  • Assist with seeking funding opportunities and grants to support tribal-related initiatives and programs at CSUB, in coordination with the Chief Diversity Officer & Special Assistant to the President and University’s development office.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE – Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Public Policy, Native American Studies, or related field.

LICENSES – Possession of a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES (SKA’s) –

  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
  • Foundational knowledge and understanding of Native American cultures, histories, and contemporary issues.
  • Familiarity with tribal protocols, sovereignty, and intergovernmental relations, particularly for California Native Nations and American Indian/Native American, Alaska Native, and Hawaiian People.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse individuals and groups.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with tribal communities or similar community engagement roles.
  • Ability to assist with navigating complex cultural, political, and bureaucratic environments with tact, sensitivity, and respect.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion principles.
  • Ability to learn, interpret, and apply a wide variety of policies and procedures relating to and impacting the area of work.

  • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure.
  • Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
  • Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in a related field.
  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment possessing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: LIGHT WORK – involves mainly sitting, up to 25% standing or walking; lifting medium weight objects limited to 25 pounds.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Other: Drive to neighboring tribal communities.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:

SCREENING: Only those applicants possessing experience most directly related to the immediate needs of the office will be invited to appear before a Qualifications Appraisal Board for the purpose of appraising training, experience, and interest in the position.
