Junior Analyst, CMHC Underwriting (Co-op Student)

CMLS Financial, one of Canada’s largest non-bank lenders, is looking for a motivated self-starter to join our Toronto team as a Junior Analyst, CMHC Underwriting this summer from May 2024 until August 2024. Learn about the industry while assisting in the underwriting of credit applications and submissions, with summaries and recommendations regarding risk assessment for commercial mortgages.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Work within the Credit Risk Management team that is responsible for assessing/underwriting new lending opportunities sourced by the CMLS Origination team.
  • Learn and understand the life cycle of a mortgage financing and internal processes and systems to facilitate a mortgage from point of origination to funding.
  • Conduct appropriate due diligence and investigation to gain solid understanding of the borrower, analyzing and interpreting financial data and credit information, assessing the cash flow and valuation of the underlying property being mortgaged, and assisting with the preparation of the credit application (mortgage presentation) based on the CMLS lending guidelines/policies.
  • Review third property reports for the property, conducting various credit searches on the borrower and reviewing tenant leases to identify potential risks with the mortgage.
  • Work closely with Risk Managers, Analysts and Funders in the Credit Risk Management team and internal partners including the Program Management Team and Originators.
  • Work on multiple tasks/deals under tight deadlines and learning to prioritize accordingly.
  • Perform other duties in keeping with the purpose and accountabilities of the job, such as preparing reports, assisting with compliance-related tasks and completing department projects as assigned

This role is for you if:

  • You are ideally a 3rd or 4th year university/post-secondary student
  • You have a keen interest in working in the Commercial Real Estate lending industry
  • You have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and are able to work well independently as well as within a team environment
  • You have experience creating and delivering business presentations and strong technical writing skills
  • You are very results-driven and possess strong organizational skills with a high attention to detail
  • You take ownership of your work and demonstrate a high degree of accountability and commitment at all times
  • You are completing an undergraduate degree in one of the following concentrations: finance, economics, urban land development, accounting or business administration
  • You are an intermediate to advanced level user of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint)
  • You have a passion for real estate combined with an understanding of financial and statement analysis
