12 month fixed term contractWe have an opportunity for a talented designer to join us at an exciting time for our team. This is a part time position, with some flexibility in working hours and an opportunity for hybrid working.As part of our professional Conservation Education and Engagement team, you’ll play a key part in our branding and design output, ensuring that everything we do is produced to a world class standard that is reflective of our values and our brand.The successful candidate will be highly motivated and support the department to effectively develop and deliver the graphic design based products for the CE&E team, including acting as a champion for the graphical and visual element of all learning materials. This can include, but is not limited to, the creation of graphics, writing tenders and briefs for external designers to complete larger projects, co-ordination of external contractors and suppliers such as graphic designers, motion graphics and print suppliersAs a Learning Designer you will:

  • Develop graphic design content for a range of educational programmes ranging from online learning resources, game materials, interpretation signs, digital screens displaying animal talks times, promotional materials and learning resources; which build and connect to our range of education audiences to support the zoo’s charitable mission of preventing extinction.
  • Provide expertise across conceptual ideas for the CE&E Directorate within interpretation schemes, education programmes, campaigns, events and activities. Input creative ideas to support the visual styling of our Strategic Development Plan (SDP) and campaigns where there are educational objectives working alongside our Interpretation strategy and Marketing campaigns.
  • Under the guidance of the Digital Learning Manager and Interpretation Manager work with external designers, freelancers, creative agencies, printers, and signage companies to deliver high quality educational resources, signage, assets and printed materials and take responsibility for reviewing and ongoing monitoring of their work.
  • Maintain an image and assets library from internal and external sources, including sourcing and creating relevant accounts with stock photograph and graphic sources to enable zoo colleagues to quickly access files.
  • Work autonomously, organising and prioritising your own workload, managing our design process and planner to effectively plan and produce design work for our education programmes and wider zoo campaigns.
  • Maintain a high level of accuracy and quality through a high turnover and variety of design tasks.
  • Maintain a learning design toolkit to document standards and ensure consistency of approach across all work.
  • Research to inform design style and identify, commission or create suitable content with appropriate usage rights. Collating and using KPI and evaluation data to drive a process of continual improvement, contributing to research about the impact of our work.
  • Follow policies, standard operating procedures and safe working practices following best practice and ensuring compliance with all relevant guidelines and legislation, such as copyright law, H&S requirements and DDA / EA compliance.
  • Support the work of our volunteers and work placement students in a variety of relevant duties, providing guidance and training as needed.
  • Take a proactive and energetic approach to building relationships within CE&E and across the zoo.
  • Develop skills and knowledge in the areas of graphic, interpretation and exhibition design, keeping up to date with best practice, researching excellence and sharing practice both internally and externally.

The Package

  • 12 month fixed term contract (maternity cover), anticipated to start in June 2024
  • 32 hours per week, worked over 4 or 5 days per week, predominately Monday – Friday. Some flexibility to work weekends/bank holidays on an ad-hoc basis is required.

  • Salary of £22,890.26 pa based on 32 hours, inclusive of our April 2024 pay award

We are proud to have a robust and transparent pay grading framework in place, in line with this please note that the salary stated is non-negotiable.Our Requirements

  • A relevant degree in design including a well-rounded portfolio, or proven track record of success working in a similar role. Extensive experience of delivering design work of the highest quality for a variety of audiences and knowledge and/or experience of implementing brand strategy.
  • Highly skilled and experienced in graphic design and content creation using Adobe Creative Suite specifically InDesign and Illustrator on a PC and/or Mac. Ability to manipulate graphics and photographs in a digital format is required. Experience in the use of all key Microsoft packages
  • Experience of graphic design within a customer-orientated environment is essential with a high level of understanding and knowledge of producing engaging content for a range of purposes (for print and screen) used to communicate with a wide range of people with varying levels of technical and subject knowledge. Using a variety of methods to visually represent content, such as infographics; screen content, with the ability to advise on this across education teams.
  • Experience of taking a design brief and translating that into quality design output with the ability to abridge information in a graphic or visual form and source quality images for graphic use, including seeking copyright clearance for their usage and editing into appropriate formats for our audiences. Knowledge of copyright issues and design and digital restrictions/advancements and how they may affect design assets.
  • An exceptional attention to detail and understanding of print and digital production processes with experience and/or knowledge of printing practices and file setup.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, able to work creatively, proactively and effectively under own initiative and as part of a team and able to work under pressure with a positive attitude.
  • Excellent time management, administration and workload planning skills. Able to prioritise conflicting deadlines.
  • The ability to develop strong relationships with colleagues from across all departments, ranging from animal to commercial and conservation/science teams and externals.

Although not essential, the following would be desirable:

  • Experience and interest in photography and film
  • An interest in Chester Zoo, ecology and biology and our mission relating to conservation and education.
  • An innovative and enthusiastic approach to your own creative craft and development.
