Company

De Montfort University

Job description

De Montfort University (DMU) is an ambitious, globally-minded institution with a relentless focus on delivering quality teaching and learning, and a campus-wide focus on providing a sector-leading student experience.

Faculty / Directorate

The role is one of several new academic posts aligned strategically to the GAGA (Game Art, Animation and Graphic Arts) Subject Group within the Leicester Media School. The Leicester Media School is based within the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Media. It offers a wide range of courses in line with emergent demand and the nature of these fast-moving, creative disciplines. Bringing together technical and creative teaching and research, the Leicester Media School offers students opportunities to take part in international competitions and be recognised by respected industry bodies. The School offers industry standard facilities, and equips students with the skills and specialist knowledge to solve real-world problems.

Role

The recently developed BA (hons) Concept and Comic Arts programme has proven to recruit well through an exciting curriculum and excellent facilities. We are looking for applicants to join a growing, creative team, bringing with them industry insight and creative expertise. The role will see you work within a team of academics across a range of modules, from the shared territory of the first year, through to the second year where the cohort increasingly explores the specialisations separately in anticipation of specialising completely in the third and final year.

The successful candidate will be able to provide the students with one or more of the following: a firm foundation of design, drawing and painting skills in Traditional Studio; guide critical thinking and improve media literacy within Contextual Studies; industry insight and mentor students to develop their own creative voice through Digital Studio, as well as challenging them to synthesise this all within Final Year Projects, which provides the lynchpin to the year with Industry style briefs and external guests.

Ideal Candidate

We are looking for a dedicated creative practitioner with proven industry and/or academic experience to help support our students to achieve their full potential. Applicants should evidence experience in the creative arts and education, they should have an exciting portfolio of relevant work, they should show enthusiasm for Concept and/or Comic Art and have excellent communication, organisational, administrative and team-working skills.

The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable within the field of Comics and/or Concept art, be a demonstrable practitioner within their discipline and be willing to be hands-on in developing the course both inwardly and outwardly. An ability to cultivate ties to industry during the course’s formative years will be a high priority as the course continues to grow. A candidate who is a pro-active connector will be a beneficial addition to the team and will be able to create a vibrant studio culture through friendly, blended-learning approaches.

As a priority, a candidate with a strong grounding within the comic industry, especially its current structure, workflows and techniques would be a huge boon to the course. Equivalent experience of the concept art industry is also desirable.

The role is focused towards practical and theoretical teaching at undergraduate level, but we also encourage continued professional practice, other forms of scholarly activity and leadership opportunities will be encouraged. The post holder will also play an active role in curriculum development, outreach and maintaining a good student experience.
