Your Role
We are looking to recruit a Software Tester apprentice to join our friendly team based in Sheffield.
As a software tester apprentice at Irwin Mitchell, your role will encompass the planning, designing, and execution of comprehensive testing to ensure the quality and reliability of our software products.
Your primary responsibility will be to meticulously plan, design, and execute tests in close collaboration with our product teams. This will involve gaining a deep understanding of project requirements and objectives.
Depending on project requirements, you will also get involved in the development and maintenance of automated test scripts.
What you’ll be doing
Test Planning
- Responsible for collaborating with project stakeholders to understand project requirements and objectives, translating them into comprehensive test plans and strategies.
- Work closely with engineers, business analysts, and other stakeholders to gather necessary information for test planning, such as requirements, user stories, and acceptance criteria.
- Provide regular updates and reports on test planning progress and status to project stakeholders, ensuring effective communication and transparency.
- Test design and Execution
- Develop and document comprehensive test designs, including test cases, test scenarios, and test scripts, based on functional and non-functional requirements with Azure Dev Ops Test Plans.
- Execute test cases and test scripts to validate software functionality, performance, load, and accessibility, ensuring adherence to test design and established quality standards.
- Record and analyse test results, identifying and documenting any defects or issues discovered during testing.
- Track and manage defects throughout the testing process, ensuring accurate and timely documentation of all identified issues with Azure Dev Ops
- Test Reporting and Documentation
- Using Azure Dev Ops test plans, prepare and deliver comprehensive test reports, summarising test progress, results, and any identified risks to the product or project teams.
Test Automation
- Assist in maintaining automated test scripts using industry-leading automation tools and frameworks.
- Client and Colleague Focus
- Able to participate in project meetings, providing updates on the testing progress and potential risks or issues.
- Support business users perform UAT testing, providing guidance and supporting them to create efficient business test scenarios and performing test execution

- Have excellent attention to detail, prioritisation and organisation skills.
- Passionate about technology
- Eagerness to learn new technologies and processes
- Ability to build good working relationships
- Some prior knowledge of software testing and Quality Assurance would be desirable, but this is not essential.
What will I study?
Given the nature of the role, you will be working with Estio who are our training provider and they will provide full study support for this apprenticeship. This is an apprenticeship opportunity and following completion; you will also obtain the Level 4 Software Tester Apprenticeship qualification and apprenticeship badge of honour which is recognised by the British Computer Society . What are the entry requirements?
You’ll need 5 GCSEs at grade A* to C or 9 to 4 (or equivalent), including Maths and English. You’ll also need at least 3 A Levels (or equivalent) at Grade C or above (excluding General Studies) in order to meet the minimum academic requirements needed to complete this apprenticeship.
