Applications are invited for the post of Locum Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon.We are a forward-thinking team with the drive and desire to provide the best clinical care for patients and families in our locality and beyond. You will join an existing MDT of 6 surgeons, registrars, foundation doctors, extended-scope physiotherapists, physician associates, and secretarial and administration staff. The successful appointee will be expected to participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and clinical audits. The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust consists of three acute teaching hospitals serving the whole population of Leicestershire. It is fully committed to Continuing Medical Education for consultants.Main duties of the job
- Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients.
- To share responsibility for the day-to-day management of patients with colleagues.
- To promote new ways of working and coordinating care for patients in the community and to ensure that services are based on effective and integrated partnerships across the health community.
- Take part in multidisciplinary case conferences.
- Supervise and train junior medical staff.
- To be involved in appraising and assessing juniors.
- Teaching, research and administration.
- To proactively develop the service.
- To actively participate in departmental and Trust matters concerning clinical governance and auditing
About usLeicester has a high reputation for providing Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery. The successful candidate will become a member of a large and highly rated musculoskeletal unit with 49 Consultants covering the whole range of subspecialty interests. We also have an extended multidisciplinary team of extended-scope physiotherapists and advanced nurse practitioners. Leicester has one of the busiest Emergency departments in the country, seeing over 150,000 new patients per year. The successful candidate will be a member of the spinal on-call only and will not participate in the general Orthopaedic on-call. Emergency work is based at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. Elective work will be undertaken at the Leicester General Hospital. There are great opportunities for research and teaching. The University of Hospitals of Leicester is a major acute teaching hospital trust. Close links exist with local Universities and NHS Trusts. Leicester is an active partner in the local, regional academic and clinical networks. The post holder will be expected to help supervise and support Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery Specialty Registrars based in Leicester.Job description
Job responsibilities
- To provide elective surgery: Spinal Surgery
- To provide Spinal trauma care and contribute to the 1 in 6 on-call rota.
- To support and take joint responsibility for the clinical work of other multidisciplinary team members.
- To supervise and teach undergraduate and post-graduate trainees and healthcare workers who rotate through the department.
- By actively participating in audits, we aim to ensure that clinical practice is effective and efficient and that appropriate monitoring of clinical care takes place.
- To work with the CMG management team to ensure services are delivered efficiently and reflect best practices with processes and governance to match.
- To provide continuing responsibility for the care of the patients in their charge and the proper organisation and functioning of their clinical practice.
- To take responsibility for ensuring that critical clinical incidents, as defined in the Trusts Critical Incident Policy, are reported in a timely manner.
- To undertake mandatory & statutory training as determined by the Trust and the CMG.
