Job description

Job Description:

M&A Associate, Strategic Growth & Investments, Fujitsu

Are you passionate to take new challenges and drive company transformation? Can you build complex financials models, do company research and coordinate M&A transactions? Do you want to make an impact and change the way the world works? Do you want to collaborate and achieve together with committed people the sourcing, evaluation and execution of acquisitions in North America? This is your world and your opportunity to transform it for the better.

Background

In September 2019, Fujitsu president Takahito Tokita outlined a bold new strategy for the 80-year-old organization: evolve from an IT company to a Digital Transformation (“DX”) company. To accelerate the transition, Fujitsu plans to aggressively invest in several emerging trends including data utilization, artificial intelligence, IoT, cloud computing, cyber security, 5G, and large-scale, leading-edge innovations such as super-computers. In addition to investing in these areas, the company plans to devote 500 billion yen (~€ 3.7 billion) over the next 5 years to build and acquire businesses that will expand the company’s digital transformation capabilities. Finally, for its own internal digital transformation, Fujitsu will invest in relevant new people and processes and upgrade infrastructure ensuring the right team, skills, and systems to make the company’s bold vision a reality.

One early step in this transformation is the establishment of a new “Strategic Growth & Investments” (aka “SG&I”) team within the company structure, with the purpose to build an M&A capability in-house and to integrate that capability into the fabric of the company. The SG&I team is now expanding in the US to cover expected rise in M&A activity in North America.

Your role

We are looking for a M&A Associate to support the sourcing, evaluation and execution of acquisition opportunities in North America.

The M&A Associate will be responsible for conducting critical research and analysis of potential acquisition and/or investment target companies. The work the associate does will be essential inputs into the team’s decisions to buy or pass on potential acquisition targets. To be successful, the M&A Associate would need to produce accurate, high-quality research about companies, including their historic performance, market positioning, competitor set, strategy, people/leadership, etc. Additionally, he/she would need to generate detailed financial models based on the company’s past performance and potential future performance. The M&A Associate will also participate actively in live M&A deals, take part and coordinate due diligence, communicate with internal and external partners and support the preparation of deal documentation and internal investment committee materials.

This is a new role within a new function in Fujitsu. For that reason, it will require a team player who is flexible, can learn fast, and is ready to work hard. In exchange, he/she will receive a terrific, on-the-job learning opportunity and a chance to be on the front line of transformation at the company. The opportunity for advancement is strong and very clear.

  • Extensive experience researching organizations and collecting data from a wide range of sources
  • Ability to prepare succinct and clear materials on a company and make informed recommendations to the team, based on analysis of large amounts of detailed financial information
  • Familiarity with consulting/services organizations and their operating models; a strong understanding of the growth triggers of a services business is extremely helpful in this role

In terms of skills, the ideal candidate will possess:

  • Excellent communication skills: a strong ability to present information in a clear and crisp manner + comfort in speaking up and forming/sharing his/her opinion
  • A deep passion for the art of financial analysis and modelling
  • Strong analytical skills, ability to quickly develop a baseline understanding of a complex company
  • Speed: the ability to quickly gather and consolidate information from many sources
  • Creativity: ability to “think outside the box” to find information
  • A “can-do” attitude; willingness to dig in and develop frameworks and models from scratch
  • A desire to pioneer a new function within Fujitsu and be part of a global team who will work hard and collaborate extensively with one another to “listen, learn, plan, and execute”; ability to co-work closely with colleagues in cross-functional and cross-cultural teams
  • Excellent command of Excel and Power Point
  • A high level of motivation to function as a key member in supporting the Acquisitions team in the execution and management of the entire acquisition process

Metrics of Success

  • Flexible, clear, understandable financial models
  • Detailed yet concise profiles of target companies
  • Positive feedback from leadership and colleagues
