About this opportunity:

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Community & Indigenous Affairs this individual will play a pivotal role in Cenovus’s dedication to building strong, lasting partnerships with Indigenous communities. This position will contribute to the success Cenovus’s growth strategy by improving key community-company relationships in our existing operating areas, as well as our growth initiatives. The goal is to build long-term, positive relationships with Indigenous leaders. This individual will be the first point of contact for emerging issues needed for the communities and provide leadership to the regional Senior Advisors who support the Oilsands and Conventional operations.

This position may be located at any of Cenovus’s Alberta locations.

What you’ll do:

Lead regional Senior Advisors who complete Community & Indigenous Affairs functions within Cenovus’s Oilsands and Conventional operations.

Provide leadership and direction to regional Senior Advisors; establish goals, handle performance expectations and support employee development.

Provide strategic advice, ongoing reporting and/or presentations to senior management regarding Indigenous engagement and consultation.

Maintain awareness of national, regional and local Indigenous issues that could impact Cenovus’s operations and growth opportunities.

Provide assistance to media relations, communications and emergency response plans.

Internally, establish relationships and commitment from business partners and subject matter authorities at various levels to support the development and delivery of Cenovus’s exploration, development and operations.

Build positive partnerships and collaborate with community leaders that include First Nations, Metis, various Indigenous groups, municipalities and local community-led organizations and enterprises.

Guide regional Senior Advisors to progress economic reconciliation through Cenovus’s supply chain and (economic) business development processes.

Support in the stewardship and implementation of Cenovus’s long term agreement commitments, including committee participation and senior leader briefings, where applicable.

Assist in negotiations with Indigenous communities with the Senior Manager.

Build constructive relationships, manage impacts and risks, and deliver value to Indigenous communities adjacent to Cenovus’s operating regions.

Support the development and execution of regional social investment initiatives ensuring alignment with Cenovus’s Social Investment Framework.

Establish team goals and objectives that inform the Community and Indigenous Affairs broader strategy.

Supervise Indigenous consultation for regulatory approvals and stakeholder engagement on land use matters.

Represent Cenovus at community meetings, open houses in a professional manner.

Coordinate the implementation of Cenovus Stakeholder Management Software.

Who you are:

Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

Minimum of 10-12+ years progressive experience in Indigenous relations alongside communities.

Experience implementing long term agreements with Indigenous nations.

Must possess solid communication skills, the ability to communicate with care and discretion and the keen ability to listen.

Demonstrated experience in communicating subject matter to senior leadership in a clear and concise manner.

Experience in the supervision of staff.

Confirmed ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.

The following will be considered an asset:

Conflict resolution, negotiation skills.

Experience communicating technical information in plain language.

This role requires the successful candidate to hold a valid driver’s license and be willing to travel throughout the region including overnight as required.
