Job description
Are you looking for a leadership role that will have you oversee and manage multiple construction projects? Do you want to work in an environment where you’re responsible for ensuring safety, compliance, and project oversight?As a Construction Manager (CM), You will have the opportunity to lead and supervise multiple projects, providing direct oversight to the General Contractor handling construction and remediation work. You will ensure that all necessary permits are on-site, manage pre-job briefings for safety compliance, and make sure that all historical documentation is available. Additionally, you are responsible for completing various checklists, such as hazardous material checklists, to ensure the projects run smoothly and safely. - Managing Construction Leads and Construction Field Representatives in overseeing field execution of remediation and restoration projects.
- Providing progress oversight, reporting and strategic input in the areas of safety, work planning and schedule/cost management.
- Reviewing the scopes of the projects, deliverables and timing.
- Assisting in administering Work Package budgets and schedules and supporting the various Project Managers in managing the overall PHP – spell it out the first time budgets and schedules.
- Providing oversight of contractor work in the field, particularly for scope and schedule adherence, progress verification, quality, safety, and license considerations.
- Enforcing workplace safety at all times using event-free tools.
- Ensuring environmental aspects are considered on job sites.
- Assisting in the preparation of contract documents and contractor selection.
- Ensuring all data pertaining to hazard issues such as asbestos and the rules on hiring contractors to perform such work at CNL is included.
- Assisting the construction team in the development of work plans.
- Confirming contractor employees have attended CRL Construction Safety Orientation training courses and obtained all security clearances.
- Verifying Contractor qualifications.
- Verifying Equipment certification.
- Maintaining project-specific daily site visit logs.
- Ensuring construction boundaries are controlled.
- Coordinating work to be done by internal resources and/or arranging to procure required materials.
- Managing and monitoring work progress, expenditures and forecasts, reporting accordingly to the Project Management teams.
- Assessing work scope completion upon receipt of contractor invoices and reviewing invoices if the Project Teams requests.
- Managing and monitoring project changes or modifications using an approved change notice system.
- Ensuring appropriate field engagement/compliance with regulatory authorities and other agencies ( Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA), Electrical Safety Authority (ESA), etc).
- Assisting in preparing Event Notification Forms (ENFs) and Nonconformance Records (NCRs) as required.
- Providing oversight for equipment being removed.
- Ensuring all equipment and components are appropriately identified.
- Identifying the resources required to mitigate hazards and assist in coordinating these resources.
- Attending construction meetings as required.
- Working with Project Teams to ensure all record copies, warranties, manuals, operating instructions, and training are submitted and delivered to appropriate personnel.
- Working with Project Teams to ensure all required inspections have been performed and corresponding records are submitted to CNL.
- Providing inspections from an overall workmanship perspective and ensuring all project objectives are met.
- Maintaining focus on-site safety and related safety programs/documentation.
- Ensuring project productivity/continuity; providing input to PD teams to address observed productivity impasses.
- Providing mentorship to CNL site representatives to supplement project/industry experience.
- Interfacing with General Contractor in conjunction with PD teams to address site issues, conflicts, change conditions
- Exercising due diligence from a legal and contractual perspective.
- Other duties as assigned by your manager.
What we are looking for:
- Education
- Post-secondary education in a directly related Field of study will be considered an asset to the prospective candidate.
- Experience
- Demonstrate 10 years of relevant construction experience or a minimum of fifteen (15) years of experience in the field of construction, in particular with large earthworks projects employing heavy equipment.
- Experience being progressively responsible for projects related to soil remediation/restoration projects; experience in general construction/capital projects is also an asset for the prospective candidate.
- Past project experience in managing or supervising the work of contractors, consultant engineers, and vendors.
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret construction documents, technical specifications, contract conditions documents and working drawings.
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Thorough knowledge and demonstrated experience in applying contract administration and construction oversight to effectively manage the output of external suppliers.
- Knowledge of the National Building Code, Canada Labour Code, Ontario OH&S Act & Regulations for Construction Projects, and other codes pertaining to life safety such as Ontario Regulations dealing with hazardous materials.
- Demonstrated ability to read and understand specifications and drawings and interpret complex construction drawings; ensure that field activities are consistent with documented project objectives.
- Demonstrated supervisory and interpersonal skills and can work effectively with others.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Working knowledge of all current applicable company regulations, safety regulations procedures and collective agreements.
- Have a willingness to undergo additional training appropriate to the position, (e.g.) computers, quality assurance, applicable codes, supervisory, and team building skills.
- Have a working knowledge of construction management software systems such as MS Project or other applicable programs.
- Security Clearance Eligibility Required
- Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat’s “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”
Working Conditions:
- Working in areas under construction where alertness to personal safety is of concern.
- Requirement to work outside in all seasons and on occasion in areas where radiological safety control is a necessity.
- May be required to be scheduled to work before and after the normal workday in accordance with the scheduled work crew.
- Working on-site which may be in inclement weather, on public project sites and in proximity to environmental hazards.
