Overview
Reporting to the Director, Thermal Operations, the incumbent will plan, schedule, direct and coordinate the work activities of staff, inspect facilities, detect and diagnose faults, and undertake routine and non-routine mechanical & electrical maintenance in Thermal Division plants. Develops both short term and long term operational and maintenance work plans, sets priorities, assigns and monitors completion of work. Leads staff in the managing of change, coaches and develops less experienced staff and facilitates technical and non-technical problem solving to ensure staff competence.
Under the direction of the Director, Thermal Operations: Leads the daily operation of the Maintenance Services Department; is responsible to ensure the Mission, Vision and Values of the organization are articulated and understood by employees. Must lead the staff towards the achievement of the divisional goals and objectives. Operates as a supervisor for direct reports, which includes, setting objectives, assigning duties, assessing and managing individual performance, with the aim of delivering results.
Responsibilities
- Always work safely, adhere to all aspects of the NTPC Health & Safety and Environmental programs, comply with all rules & regulations, and continually practice health & safety while performing any duties.
- As a member of the Thermal Operations management team develops and evaluates short and long term operational, capital, and strategic plans and budgets and assists in the preparation of Division planning and budget documents for corporate submission including job costing, budget monitoring, forecasting and variance reporting.
- Coordinates team meetings on a regular and ad hoc basis to establish overall group goals and objectives and provides team leadership, direction and support to the generation group on matters related to the scheduling of staff and assignment of work to ensure the efficient day-to-day operation and maintenance of diesel, gas and solar facilities. Develops and maintains maintenance check list for CMMS Preventative work orders.
- Develops, co-ordinates and monitors mechanical & electrical systems and preventive maintenance programs, reporting systems and maintenance budgets for all diesel plants, buildings and property in the Deh Cho / Sahtu Region in the Thermal Division including solar and gas to ensure that equipment and property is effectively maintained, and that work is completed accurately and on schedule. Maximize the operation availability of all renewable resources.
- Sets priorities and coordinates the work activities of staff and contractors. Coaches and develops less experienced staff and facilitates technical and non-technical problem solving to ensure staff competence.
- Provides maintenance service and advice to the Manager of Generation Support Deh Cho / Sahtu for projects, including providing recommendations in the development of operation and maintenance procedures and best work practices. Coordinates recommendations across the Division with the Manager, Maintenance Services Beaufort / Delta.
- Oversees, monitors and prepares requisitions, special work orders, general contracts, specifications and authorization forms as required for assigned maintenance projects on general plant maintenance, gas and solar. This includes performing routine paperwork, record keeping and attending meetings, as well as overseeing the specification and ordering of equipment.
- Visits plants in the Deh Cho / Sahtu Region twice a year to complete preventative maintenance inspections to ensure compliance with mandatory and preventative maintenance and safety requirements and to obtain information for planning and budgeting purposes.
- Manages assigned capital projects, including coordination with the division asset manager to set the scope of the project, issuing and awarding of quotes, tenders and request for proposals for services and supplies for the capital projects, management of the construction or procurement of the assets and coordination with the asset manager and the Finance Division on the required administration work to close out the capital project in accordance with corporate policies and procedures.
Qualifications
- Journeyman level Electrician or Diesel Mechanic with a minimum of three (3) years related experience in power plant operations and maintenance including operation maintenance and repair of thermal powered mechanical & electrical generation equipment and systems. Candidates with a one (1) year related technician program may be considered with a minimum of four (4) years of related experience in power plant operations and maintenance.
- Must have supervisory experience in supervising, planning, coaching, development, and coordinating the work of others. Supervisory experience includes, but is not limited to, responsibility of hiring, directly assigning work to, assessing the performance of and imposing discipline on employees. Equivalencies may be considered. Equivalencies would include training or supervising of apprentices, new tradestaff or operators.
- Must demonstrate experience in troubleshooting mechanical & electrical generation control systems, generation protection systems, SCADA systems,
- Knowledge of administrative and financial planning procedures to coordinate maintenance and plant operation activities and to provide sound advice and recommendations regarding the development, implementation and monitoring of area plans and operating budgets.
- Strong interpersonal and team building skills to collaborate effectively with the Thermal Division with staff, other Managers and Directors
- Experience with Computer skills to operate a variety of software programs (word processing, spreadsheets, databases and electronic mail, Internet, maintenance management,) to input data, produce work orders, administrative and financial documents and reports.
- Knowledge of applicable Health, Safety and Environmental regulations, practices and codes.
- Good interpersonal, communication, organizational and analytical/problem solving abilities are seen as very important to be successful on-the-job performance.
- The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate that they can function independently and make decisions regarding the day-to-day operation of Isolated Generating Station facilities.
- Class 5 driver’s license or equivalent.
- Satisfactory criminal record check required.
Salary for this position ranges from $58.55/hr. – $73.18/hr. plus a combined location & accommodation allowance of approximately $10,384 per annum.
