Job description
The incumbent will be part of a well-established team of professionals and technologists specializing in the study of neutron irradiation damage and its effects on reactor component material performance. The branch conducts research into alloys/components in current reactor designs as well as alloys/components proposed for future reactor concepts. The capabilities of the branch include developing irradiation programs; characterizing irradiated materials; developing predictive models of radiation damage and deformation; and applying neutron scattering techniques to material research.
What you will be doing:
- Perform mechanical testing of materials.
- Perform dimensional measurements on components with a variety of techniques (optical extensometry, laser, density measurements, etc.).
- Perform basic data analysis and document the results in reports.
- Ensure that the work is conducted to the appropriate Quality Assurance standards.
- Ensure the safe operation of laboratories.
- Perform routine sample preparation for optical microscopy, focused ion beam, transmission electron microscope, scanning electron microscope or X-ray diffraction analysis.
- Operation of instruments such as optical microscopes, focused ion beam / scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, or X-ray diffraction
What we are looking for:
- Graduation with a diploma related to materials or mechanical engineering technology from a recognized institute of advanced technology, or equivalent formal education
- Or Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent and normally has more than 3 years pertinent experience or the equivalent in experience, additional education and/or training.
- Good understanding of materials science.
- Good understanding of common materials testing techniques
- Basic understanding of algebraic expressions, statistical methods and regression analysis.
- Ability to interpret mechanical drawings and electrical schematics.
- Strong project management, experimental planning and communication skills.
- Experience in one or more of the following areas is an asset:
o Mechanical testing.
o Strain gauges
o Extensometers
o Operations in a metallurgical research laboratory.
o Operation of optical microscopes, focused ion beam (FIB), transmission electron microscopes (TEM), scanning electron microscopes (SEM), and/or X-ray diffraction (XRD).
o Basic design of test jigs and fixtures. Experience with CAD programs is an asset.
o Programming in LabView / Visual Basic / Spreadsheets or similar languages.
Application of thermocouples, pressure transducers, strain gauges or other sensors.
Security clearance eligibility required: Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security”.
