Our Chalk River location is looking for a Mechanical Engineer to support our Mechanical Equipment Development branch. - Working as part of a team designing moderately complex mechanical equipment, tooling and components to meet customer commitments.
- Developing design requirements and defining critical characteristics using engineering judgement, industry best practices, codes and standards, and input from subject matter experts.
- Gathering information on existing codes, standards, and bought-out items.
- Reviewing of engineering drawings, calculating clearances and fits, and tolerance stack up.
- Taking engineering responsibility for drawings, other engineering documents, and the work of those supervised.
- Leading or participating in team meetings and design reviews.
- Generating design ideas based on experience, inputting from other subject matter experts, owning area of expertise.
- Preparing design documents for complex, multi-discipline designs.
- Preparing test plans, reports, and record sheets to demonstrate compliance with design requirements.
- Guiding the work of Mechanical Laboratory Technicians and other Mechanical Engineers in test execution.
- Other duties as assigned by your manager.
What we are looking for:
- Education
- At minimum, a Bachelors (Honour) in Mechanical Engineering from a university of recognized standing or membership in an engineering professional organization authorized by statute to establish qualification for membership in that organization is required.
- An advanced degree in engineering (MASc or PhD) is considered an asset.
- Experience
- Four to eight (4-8) years of mechanical engineering job experience and is a Professional Engineer in the province of Ontario or eligible for licensure in Ontario.
- Experience in solving and understanding design problems which push the boundaries of traditional mechanical engineering is an asset and must be comfortable thriving at the edge of their understanding while simultaneously working to expand their knowledge.
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- The ability and desire to innovate.
- The ability to learn, adapt, and pivot as new information is discovered or becomes available.
- Demonstrated expertise within a specific area or field of study related to design and development or possesses a broad scientific and engineering background.
- The ability to evaluate the fitness of a component to meet design intent through the application of solid mechanics, heat transfer, fluid dynamics, etc.
- The ability to read, understand, and take professional responsibility for engineering drawings.
- The ability to lead small multi-discipline teams or sub-teams to meet prescribed outcomes.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- General computer literacy in word processing and a high degree of expertise with spreadsheet software.
- Knowledge of technologies outside of traditional mechanical design, as would experience in robotics, automation, and remote tooling, would be an asset.
- Security Clearance Eligibility Required
- Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat’s “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”
Working Conditions:
- Low physical demands, some periodic and minor exposure to loud noises, chemicals, metals, sharp objects, heights, confined spaces, radiological hazards, stationary machinery, vehicles.
- Work is conducted primarily in an office and prototyping machine shop environment. On occasion, travel to off-site locations is required.
- From time to time, work may have to be performed in the field, including in inclement weather and in radiologically controlled areas.

Location:
This role is a fully onsite role that requires the employee to primarily work at CNL’s Chalk River Laboratory site, with only occasional opportunities to work remotely, if desired by the employee.
