Do you like to be in a role where you will doing preventative maintenance and minor repairs? If you answered yes, then this may be the job for you! The Mechanical Service Attendant performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs of mechanical equipment while working safely to remove air-gapped systems in buildings that are being decommissioned.What will you be doing!

  • Inspect and service mechanical (eg condensate pumps, domestic hot water pumps, sewage pumps, oil and coolant changes on various pieces of precision machining equipment) by oiling, greasing, and associated tasks involved with preventive maintenance. Dispose of used materials in compliance with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) requirements.
  • Assist tradespersons as required.
  • Documenting maintenance activities by completing all pertinent paperwork.
  • Maintaining good housekeeping practices of all work areas, tools, and equipment, adhering to provincial, federal, and CNL regulations to provide a safe and efficient working environment.
  • Performing Labourer activities in Decommissioning.
  • Comply with all regulations regarding waste disposal for decommissioned buildings.
  • Test hazardous materials to determine the proper way to clean up.
  • Assisting with scaffolding and helping build containment areas before cleaning up.
  • Remove, neutralize, or clean up hazardous materials that are found or spilled.
  • Cleaning contaminated equipment for disposal by using sandblasters, power washers, etc.
  • Package and transport waste materials to a low-level waste facility.
  • Remove air-gapped systems.
  • Mechanical Service Attendants receive comprehensive training on the job. Training generally includes a combination of classroom instruction and fieldwork. In the classroom, they learn safety procedures and the proper use of personal protective equipment. While on-site, they learn about equipment and chemicals and are supervised.
  • To work with specific hazardous materials, workers must complete training and work requirements set by Legislation on handling the material.
  • Workers who treat asbestos or lead, the most common containments, must complete an employer-sponsored training program that meets Federal standards. Employer-sponsored training is usually given in-house, and the employer is responsible for covering all technical and safety subjects outlined by Federal Legislation.
  • Extensive training is required for decommissioning workers and employees at nuclear facilities. In addition to completing the hazardous waste removal training that meets Federal standards, workers must take courses on nuclear materials and radiation safety as mandated by CNL.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
  • Secondary school graduation diploma.
  • Experience
  • One (1) year of related mechanical experience.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of mechanical equipment and associated systems in order to efficiently maintain and remove systems.
  • Ability to read blueprints and drawings specific in order to have a thorough understanding of the scope of the job in question.
  • Written and verbal communication skills to be able to work in multi-trade groups and communicate with CNL staff across a broad range of disciplines.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
  • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat’s “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”
  • Working Conditions:
  • Able to work at heights, confined spaces, and varying temperatures to complete work.
