The Communications Department provides sound communications analysis, advice and planning services in support of the Bank’s policy objectives. A substantial part of the department’s work is focused on supporting the monetary policy function of the Bank and the related public activities of the Bank’s Governing Council. The Media Relations team is responsible for providing integrated services of planning, advice, content development, and implementation and evaluation of media and public relations activities.What you will do
Under the supervision of the Director, Media Relations, you will work within the media relations team, helping to liaise with the media, plan activities, and provide strategic communications advice and services to strengthen relations with the media, as well and inform and engage the broader Canadian public regarding all the Bank’s functions. You will work in close co-operation with senior Bank officials, colleagues in other departments and other sections of the Communications Department, including those responsible for stakeholder relations and speechwriting.Specifically, you will:

  • plan, draft and execute campaigns for the Bank’s external social media platforms
  • provide advice on external communications related to all of the Bank’s functions
  • provide communications advice and prepare briefing materials for senior management on sensitive, high-profile media relations issues
  • respond to media questions and organize interview requests, press conferences and other media activities
  • develop and maintain constructive ongoing relations with the media
  • help increase the department’s understanding of potential developments and risks related to high-profile media issues
  • collaborate with Bank specialists to develop communications strategies and products
  • develop and draft relatable and engaging content for publication on social media and the website.
  • take part in media monitoring and analysis
  • potentially act as press secretary for Governing Council members, which may involve travel
  • work closely with the Policy Communications and Stakeholder Relations, Museum, Digital Strategy and Services and other teams to ensure an integrated approach to the Bank’s external communications.

What you need to succeed

  • digital communications skills, including preparing text and visual content for social media platforms, with ability to summarize key narratives in accessible language
  • media relations experience, including dealing with journalists on sensitive files and issues
  • knowledge of the public environment, including the media and the political system, and how they function
  • ability to plan and manage activities in an environment requiring co-operation, coordination, and flexibility to meet objectives
  • ability to proactively manage risk issues and produce results under pressure quickly and reliably

Your education and experience
This position requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in communications, economics, journalism or related field, and five years of relevant experience in communications, media relations or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.What you need to know

  • Language requirement: English and French essential (bilingual) with a minimum starting level of functional (level 4) in second official language. Training may be provided to help reach the required level of fully functional (level 5) in second official language.
  • Priority will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents
  • Security level required: Be eligible to obtain Secret

  • Salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $90,535 to $106,512 (job grade 16)
  • The Bank offers an incentive for successfully meeting expectations at 5 to 7% of your base salary. The Bank offers additional performance pay (3%) for those who exceed expectations. Exceptional performers who far exceed expectations may be eligible for higher performance pay.
