The Communications Department provides sound communications analysis, advice and planning services in support of the Bank’s policy objectives. The Media Relations team is responsible for providing integrated services of planning, advice, content development, and implementation and evaluation of media and public relations activities.What you will do
As the Media Relations Consultant, you will be responsible for media relations activities related to the Bank’s role in overseeing retail payments in Canada. Reporting to the Director, Media Relations, you will be responsible for liaising with the media, planning activities, and providing strategic communications advice and services. This work will be carried out in close co-operation with senior Bank officials and colleagues in the Supervision Department as well as other sections of the Communications Department.Specifically, you will:

  • develop and coordinate communications activities and campaigns related to retail payments supervision, including enforcement actions
  • develop and maintain constructive ongoing relations with the media, and respond to media questions, organize interview requests, press conferences and other media activities
  • collaborate with Bank specialists to develop communications strategies and products
  • provide communications advice and prepare briefing materials for senior management on sensitive, high-profile media relations issues
  • initiate new and improved approaches to communicating about the Bank’s retail payments supervision mandate
  • draft relatable and engaging content for publication on social media and the website
  • take part in media monitoring and analysis

What you need to succeed

  • media relations experience, including dealing with journalists on sensitive files and issues
  • knowledge of the public environment, including the media and the political system, and how they function
  • experience in the approaches to communicating regulatory processes and decisions
  • digital communications skills, including preparing text and visual content for web and social media platforms, with ability to summarize key narratives in accessible language
  • ability to plan and manage activities in an environment requiring co-operation, coordination, and flexibility to meet objectives
  • ability to proactively manage risk issues and produce results under pressure quickly and reliably

  • knowledge of:
  • the Bank’s functions, policies and communications objectives
  • the payments industry
  • economics, and monetary policy

Your education and experience
This position requires a bachelor’s degree in communications, economics, journalism or related field, and five years of relevant experience in communications, media relations or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.Language requirement
The Bank’s work environment is conducive to the use of both of Canada’s official languages – English and French. The position language requirement is Level 5 (Fully Functional). If a qualified candidate who meets the language requirement of the position is not found, a qualified candidate who does not meet the language requirement may be considered. Training may be provided to help reach the required level. Both bilingual and unilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.What you need to know
