Five positions to be filled to be based in: Dedza, Lilongwe, Nkhatabay, Nkhotakota, Mangochi (Two pending funding).

The Position:

The Driver position is located in the Country Office of UNFPA in Lilongwe and in various Field Offices of UNFPA in Malawi. S/He reports to the Protocol & Transport Clerk and works with other team members in achieving the overall work of the Procurement and Logistics function. 

The Driver will provide reliable and safe driving services to UNFPA Staff, high-ranking UN officials and visitors. S/He is a member of the CO Operations Team and provides support for various functions and operations of the CO and maintains collaborative relationships with all programme and project staff as well as the administrative and operations team of the CO and Field Offices.

Job Purpose:

The Driver is responsible for effective delivery of services, and supports various operational requirements of the CO Operations Unit and Field Offices. S/He provides reliable and safe driving services to UNFPA Staff, high-ranking UN officials and visitors. 

Providing reliable and safe driving services, the Driver will uphold the highest standards of discretion and integrity, have a deep sense of responsibility, and excellent knowledge of protocol and security issues. S/He will demonstrate a client-oriented approach, courtesy, tact and ability to work with people of different national and cultural backgrounds. 

You would be responsible for:

The Driver, will be responsible for: 

A. Driving, Administration, Operations and Logistical Support in the CO & Field Office 

  •  Provide reliable and safe driving services by; driving office vehicles for the transport of UNFPA staff, officials and visitors; delivery and collection of mail and documentation, meeting official personnel and visitors at the airport, including managing visa and customs formalities when required.
  • Keep abreast of traffic and road and security and safety awareness to enable safe and on time arrival for meetings. 
  • Keep track of insurance and tax formalities.
  • Act as a translator in local language for official passengers, where necessary. 
  • Maintain records for vehicles, logs official trips, records daily mileage, records the use of fuel vouchers, and keeps records on consumption. 
  • Ensure cost-savings through proper use of vehicles through accurate maintenance of daily vehicle logs, provision of inputs to preparation of the vehicle maintenance plans and reports. 
  • Ensure availability of all the required documents/supplies including vehicle insurance, vehicle registration, vehicle logs, office directory, map of the city/country, first aid kit, and necessary spare parts in the assigned vehicle. 
  • Assist office staff in filing, photocopying and maintaining stores when required. Assist in the mailing and distribution of newsletters and publications, etc, as required. 
  • Effectively participate in the joint initiative of carpooling.
  • Guide and coach junior drivers as appropriate.
  • Assist CO staff with general administrative duties as required. 
  • Assist CO staff with general operations support duties as required. 
  • Assist CO staff with general logistics and protocol support duties as required. 
  • Assist CO staff with emergency and humanitarian support duties as required. 

B. Conducting Basic Vehicle Maintenance: 

  • Ensure that the assigned vehicle is compliant with the United Nations minimum operating standards and UNFPA’s Vehicle Policy requirements. 
  • Ensure proper day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle through timely minor repairs, arrangements for major repairs, timely changes of oil, check of tires, brakes and water levels, car washing, etc. so that the vehicle is kept clean and in good running condition at all times. 
  • Assist in the preparation of vehicle maintenance plans and history reports. 
  • Ensure safety and custody of the vehicle, including tools.

C. General Support 

  • Stand-in for other team members on selected functions as may be required. 
  • Carry out any other duties as may be required by UNFPA leadership.

Qualifications and Experience: 

Education:  

  • Completed secondary level/ high school education is required.
  • Specialized/technical training in driving or related field is desirable.

Knowledge and Experience: 

  • Valid driver’s license is a must. 
  • 2 years’ work experience as a driver in an international organization, embassy or UN system with a safe driving record is essential.
  • Knowledge of driving rules and regulations, chauffeur protocol and courtesies, and local roads and conditions, and defensive driving skills. 
  • Experience driving in an emergency/humanitarian support role is desirable. 
  • Skill in minor vehicle repairs is desirable. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team.

Languages: 

  • Fluency in oral and written English is required. Working knowledge of another UN Official Language, an asset.
