The School of Continuing Studies invites applications for the following anticipated micro-credential offered in the 2023-24 academic year.

CSGD-N147: Story and Narrative Development Studio for Games
(Spring: April 8 – May 13, 2024; Online; Asynchronous)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course examines how storytelling plays a vital role in driving video gameplay. Looking at historical and contemporary games, students will evaluate and interpret different story styles with the goal of identifying themes and procedures for their own game ideas. The course explores traditional narrative story processes, nonlinear narratives, alternative and experimental gaming narrative structures, as well worldbuilding for games. Students will also prototype their narratives in engine to explore interactivity and its impacts on story. Issues of representation, diversity, and inclusion in contemporary gaming culture will be discussed. Students will define characters, settings, and structures to create a compelling game design document. Studio work will be supported by lectures and critiques.

For online courses, students are responsible for purchasing their own software. In-person courses are held in OCAD U’s computer labs using the latest software.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A post-secondary degree (Masters preferred), or have comparable professional accomplishments,
  • Expertise in decolonizing, diverse and inclusive processes to hire Indigenous, Black, and People of Colour job candidates in the creative industries,
  • Experience with curriculum development and delivery for adult learners,
  • Excellent interpersonal and presentation/written communication skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Course preparation and delivery; participation in Instructor and program meetings.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: The contract is for the duration of the set development and delivery periods only and is subject to sufficient enrolment.
