*Please note- this is a temporary position under the NTID Faculty Fellows Program. This position will be available for three years and has been approved for an additional two years. 

The Department of Master of Science in Secondary Education at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf invites applications for one faculty position at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor. This position reports directly to the Department Chair of the MSSE program. The purpose of this position is to teach courses in the pedagogy strand and other courses, develop an administrative credential program and prepare professionals to become administrators and leaders in the education of deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Additionally, this position will engage in different research areas surrounding deaf education, with other examples in social justice, educational reform, curriculum studies, literacy, cognition, and history/legal aspects of special education.The position is a 9-month, non-tenure track appointment for 3 academic years and has been approved for another 2 years. The Visiting Assistant Professor will:

• Participate in the NTID Faculty Fellowship (NFF) program.
• Teach courses in Deaf education, pedagogy, assessment, and other relevant fields.
• Develop and support future administrator credential program
• Develop curriculum and resources for possible new programs in the MSSE department
• Assist the department chair in seeking, brainstorming and writing grant applications to further NTID’s mission in educational excellence.
• Conduct research and scholarly activities.
• Participate in professional organizations and professional development activities regarding multiculturalism, instructional strategies, curriculum concepts, teacher education and supervision.
• Participate in communication development activities.
• Work with Department Chair on other tasks if needed for program improvement and development, including new certificates and graduate programs.
• Participate in antiracism, diversity, and inclusion development activities.
• Participate fully in the department’s curricular initiatives and related faculty duties.
• Serve the department, institute, and the community as needed.

Department/College Description

The National Technical Institute for the Deaf web page is located at https://ntid.rit.edu and the Department of Master of Science in Secondary Education (MSSE) web page is located at https://www.rit.edu/ntid/msse. The MS program in Secondary Education of Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing is designed for students to earn dual certification to teach a secondary school content area for students who are hearing or deaf as well as in deaf education for grades K-12. The curriculum is taught by renowned faculty at RIT—one of the most innovative campuses in the world—serving more than 1,100 deaf and hard-of-hearing students.

Required Minimum Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Deaf Education or a relevant field.
• Experience with Assessment and gathering data for continuous program improvement.
• School District Leader certification
• At least two years in a principal or superintendent role. 
• Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and familiarity with Deaf culture strongly preferred.  Candidates who are not fluent in ASL must commence learning immediately (by enrolling in ASL courses) and be able to demonstrate proficiency within period specified in the letter of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

• Doctorate degree in education of the deaf or a relevant field. 
• Permanent Teaching certification in Deaf Education
• Scholarly productivity required: recent relevant publications, presentations, editorships, professional service or contributions in a relevant area of expertise as appropriate to assistant professor rank or higher.
• University teaching experience
• Research, Teaching, or Working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing in international settings.
• At least 5 years teaching experience in deaf education.
