  • Helping to strengthen UNEP’s capacity to engage in the One Health scenario in North America to develop and implement long-term strategic approaches that fully recognize and integrate the environmental dimensions of One Health o Focusing on the six OH-JPA action pathways and the synergies needed to institutionalize and operationalize the One Health approach, including preliminary preventive actions. • Development of a study to identify institutions, regional opportunities, key policies and initiatives and relevant stakeholders related to One Health in North America. • Working relationship and fluent communication with North American institutions in charge of One Health initiatives. • Enhanced knowledge exchange, a strengthened evidence base, increased awareness and advocacy, and improved capacity in relation to One Health. • Enhanced collaboration with key stakeholders on One Health in North America. • Improved visibility and increased resource allocation towards the advancement of Nature 4 Health (N4H). • A Resource Mobilization strategy on One Health is established. • Monthly reports on One Health developments delivered to UNEP, including the Regional Director for North American and the One Health Coordinator. • Inputs, insights and recommendations provided to the Quadripartite collaboration on One Health, particularly on the Environmental Dimension of One Health. • Contribute to the preparation of various written products for UNEP and the Quadripartite, e.g. draft background papers, analytical notes, sections of reports and studies, contributions to publications, strategic documents, guidelines and policy recommendations, etc.

Work LocationRegional Office for North America, UNEPExpected duration5-9 monthsDuties and ResponsibilitiesThe United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. This assignment aims to support the UNEP North America Office in strengthening its capacity and expertise to engage in One Health processes and support the implementation of One Health activities at the regional and global levels. In March 2022, UNEP formally joined the Quadripartite Partnership for One Health. UNEP specifically aims to strengthen the environmental dimensions of human, animal and plant health, and contribute to the joint objectives of the expanded One Health Alliance, including through the development of the implementation framework for the One Health Joint Action Plan and the Quadripartite Strategic Framework. for the Collaboration on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), which were developed by the four partner organizations and topic-specific action plans and initiatives, such as the Nature for Health initiative and the Global Action Plan on AMR. Under the overall supervision of the Regional Director and the Regional Sub-programme Coordinator for Nature Action, and in close coordination with the One Health Team based in UNEP’s headquarters, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties: a) Map regional opportunities and develop closer partnerships with the government and stakeholders of the United States (U.S.), Canada and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO): • Monitor and analyze key policies and initiatives related to One Health, such as the U.S interagency coordination mechanisms and groups on One Heath; Canada, including through Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), Health Canada or the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). • Liaise and develop working relationships with North American institutions to advocate for UNEP priorities related to One Health. • Coordinate with relevant stakeholders in North America, including UN agencies, intergovernmental organizations, civil society groups, and scientific experts, to gather evidence, exchange knowledge, and foster collaboration on One Health. b) Contribute to the mainstreaming of the Environmental Dimension of One Health in Policies and Initiatives: • Enhance UNEP’s understanding of what is happening on One Health at the regional level, and in turn identify opportunities to promote the work of UNEP in North America. • Track and provide timely information on the policy landscape on the environmental dimension of One Health in North America. • Identify existing One Health stakeholder networks in North America and make proposals on how UNEP can either contribute to them or, in the absence of a network, identify with partners how to establish such a network. • Identify funding opportunities and support resource mobilization efforts to expand and deepen UNEP’s activities in high-risk countries, leveraging financial and non-financial resources. • Support UNEP’s communication and outreach efforts on One Health, including raising awareness and support for initiatives. • Support the Quadripartite collaboration on One Health, including engaging in and joining Quadripartite collaboration meetings, as relevant. • Promote and gather resources to advance the Nature4Health (N4H) initiative into its second phase. • Expand networks with crucial stakeholders to enlarge N4H’s partners to strengthen N4H advocacy. • Incorporate the One Health approach into various multilateral processes (e.g. the Global Biodiversity Framework), establishing it as a pivotal element for engagement. • Any other related tasks as required or assigned by the supervisor.Qualifications/special skillsAdvanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in the fields of environment, public health, global health, one health policy, ecosystem health, microbiology, or other closely related sector is required. A Bachelor’s degree in combination with four years qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. •A first-level university degree with a minimum of 4 years of relevant work experience or a Master’s degree with 2 years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management in One Health or related areas is required. •Experience in environmental health, ecosystem health, health-related economic and social behavioral sciences, infectious diseases and zoonoses, public health, ecology or terrestrial ecosystems is an asset. •Knowledge and understanding of theories, concepts and approaches relevant to One Health, Eco Health, Planetary Health and other integrated approaches to health, particularly from an environmental perspective, but complemented by a good understanding of public and animal health aspects is desired. •Knowledge and understanding of theories, concepts and approaches relevant to One Health, Eco Health, Planetary Health and other integrated approaches to health, particularly from an environmental perspective, but complemented by a good understanding of public and animal health aspects is desired.LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
