The Nuclear Operator 1 (NO-1) is a Senior Nuclear Operator with supervisory responsibilities supporting the successful operation of the facility.
Reporting to the Facility Supervisor the NO-1 leads as well as works with a group of employees in the Nuclear Operator 2 (NO-2) and Nuclear Operator Trainee (NO2) positions. The NO-1 assigns work, provides instruction, and ensures that the work is completed as required, safely and in accordance with applicable policies and procedures.
What will you be doing !
- Carry out operational duties of a NO2 as required by Facility supervision.
- Start up and shut down the various systems as well as respond to abnormal situations (power failure, loss of support system, leaks or spills);
- Draft work instruction documents (eg. OTOs, Valve Slips) for review and approval by System Responsible Operations Specialists and Supervision;
- Walk down of work instruction documents (eg. OTOs, Valve Slips) for verification prior to approval and execution;
- Acquire samples from the various systems (water samples from system and containers;
- Operate overhead cranes, monorail hoists, chain falls, and follow the appropriate hand signals;
- Perform appropriate rigging as required;
- Perform valve manipulations as per Routine Valve Slips and Procedures.
- Operate equipment such as the lift truck;
- Change over and replace gas cylinders;
- Correctly use a variety of hand tools;
- Correctly operate pH and conductivity metres (following appropriate training);
- Accurately record lab results, perform sample analysis calculations, identify deviations from expected parameters, take appropriate action and ensure all required samples are obtained;
- Operate all telephones, public address system and paging system accurately and using proper etiquette;
- Complete various reports such as timecard checklist, daily overtime report, WCAF’s and timecards;
- Generate ImpAct reports where appropriate
- Acknowledge, understand and respond to all alarms by advising the Facility Supervisor, System Responsible Operations Specialist of the alarm condition;
- Assist with trip and alarm tests, relay appropriate information and complete trip and alarm forms.
- Distribute keys, radios, oxygen monitors and locks and enter information in appropriate log book to track and control such distribution;
- Monitor and control access to NRU and other duties as applicable to the role.
What we are looking for:
- Good communication skills (verbal and written) and possess the ability to interpret and follow instructions in addition to directing others.
- Ability to lead and supervise others.
Education:
An Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with credits in Mathematics (MCB4U), Chemistry (SCH3U), Physics (SPH3U) and English (ENG4U), or a minimum of Ontario Grade 12 advanced level plus 4 Ontario Academic Credits is Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and English.
OR
A minimum of Ontario Grade 12 advanced level plus four (4) Ontario Academic Credits (OAC) in Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and English.
OR
The equivalent in education and/or experience, plus a minimum of 5 years as a NO-2.
Security Clearance:
- Security clearance eligibility required: Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom.
Working Conditions:
Physical and Sensory Demands:
The position includes working in a number of indoor and outdoor environments ranging from control room/office work to field work in conditions ranging from outdoor climate to cramped areas where industrial and radiological conditions exist.
Working Environment:
This position requires working both at a control station desk and fieldwork operating equipment, making observations/measurements, or directing maintenance personnel.
- Fieldwork carries with it a risk of contamination and chemical hazards and caution and correct use of PPE&C must be exercised to prevent exposure.
- Heavy lifting, within Labour Code Guidelines, is required.
- Other physical demands include walking 5 flights of stairs routinely within NRU, climbing ladders, and walking outdoors to patrol an extensive area of outbuildings.
- NRU operations include large machinery that requires the use of hearing protection as well as hard hats and safety glasses during some operational duties.
- Nuclear Operators will be required to use full personal protection equipment including a respirator on short notice.
