Northwood is currently accepting applications for a Term (12 Month) Nurse Practitioner to join in primary health care and in Long-term care.

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) works autonomously to diagnose, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe pharmaceuticals, and perform procedures within the legislated scope of practice and where required. The NP provides direct care and collaborates with other members of the health care team. The NP works in close collaboration with Physicians and interdisciplinary teams.

The NP adheres to the NSCN Standards for Nursing Practice and the Code of Ethics and is responsible and accountable at all times for their own practice consistent with relevant legislation, professional, and ethical standards. The NP is accountable to identify, analyze, and evaluate activities that are reflective of quality improvement initiatives.

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) collaborates with and complements other members of the health care team for the achievement of person-centered care for long term care residents living with specialized and complex needs. The NP provides clinical leadership for Pharmacy & Therapeutics committees and integrates current scientific knowledge and best practice guidelines in decision making based on critical appraisal and application of literature and research findings. The NP is an integral member of the team and collaborates with the Medical director and unit/house physicians.

The ideal candidate will act as a resource, preceptor and mentor for nurses, students and other team members and will work with the interdisciplinary care team to develop and deliver services to residents living at our Halifax and Bedford Campuses.

Qualifications:

  • Master of Nursing: Advanced Nursing Practice stream or equivalent NP program
  • Current registration as a Nurse Practitioner with CRNNS – Family/All Ages (or pending)
  • Current BCLS Certification
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle as this position may require work at multiple sites
  • Recent relevant experience working in a Nurse Practitioner role within Long Term Care preferred

  • Communication: Builds positive and open relationships with residents, families, community partners, team members, and other professionals using verbal, written and electronic means.
  • Critical Thinking: Clinical judgment and problem solving with the ability to integrate and evaluate pertinent data sources to problem-solve effectively within scope of practice.
  • Person-Centered Practice: Strong ethical standards and a commitment to professional development and life-long learning. Promotion of care for and with residents and significant others. Sensitive to client advocacy and social justice concerns.
  • Teaching: Ability to transmit information grounded in behavior change and principles of self-management intended to instruct clients and others about topics essential for health care and well-being. Application of innovative education and counselling technologies and strategies.
  • Time and Resource Management: Implementing activities to promote cooperation among relevant others, collaboration across disciplines and related activities.
  • Leadership: Promotes staff morale, cooperation, assertiveness and risk-taking, creative planning for change and innovation, implementation of policies or other protocols, and ongoing professional development.
  • Language Competencies: Ability to work with others to deliver care in other languages is an asset.
  • Technology Literacy: Experience with Microsoft Office and electronic health records.
  • Must have the ability to maintain regular and consistent attendance in accordance with the Northwood standard.

Salary/Benefits: As per NSNU Collective Agreement

Start Date: ASAP

Hours/Shift: 80 hours bi-weekly (Full Time) – Days
