This may not be appropriate for all roles but can be explored at interview.Role purposeThese roles collaborate closely with the Global Process Owner (GPO) to design and implement changes to global finance processes, both as part of routine operations and Finance Transformation. They focus on improving and standardizing finance processes across the Global Finance team, aiming for greater efficiency and effectiveness. Key responsibilities include managing deliverables from design to implementation, working with various finance and operational teams globally, and ensuring that changes meet organizational requirements. They also build relationships with Shared Service providers and Financial Control staff worldwide to drive improvements and maintain effective financial controls. The roles may represent or act on behalf of the GPO and work across GPO teams as needed.Role contextThese roles within the British Council Finance team operate globally, supporting both UK and overseas operations. They are part of the Global Process Owner teams in Finance Control, supporting routine changes and transformation projects. Responsibilities include advising, designing, and implementing process improvements to enhance transactional and financial procedures, ensuring cost benefits and compliance with tax and legal requirements for British Council entities.Close collaboration with the financial accounting team in the Managed Service Provider (MSP) is crucial, as they produce much of the data for global reporting. The roles also involve working with Strategic Business Units (SBUs), regional teams, and Corporate Finance teams, requiring strong relationship-building skills.Role holders must quickly grasp complex issues/projects, analyze risks, and contribute effectively to successful project outcomes. They need to be comfortable challenging senior stakeholders to ensure compliance with financial processes, practices, and corporate policies. Effective time management and prioritization skills are essential, given the demanding workload.The main challenge and opportunity for the team is to simplify, standardize, and automate global finance processes and controls to benefit the British Council. This includes reducing the excessive number of processes currently in operation. Role holders must develop lean processes and gain buy-in from stakeholders and process users to achieve end-to-end improvements.Regular interaction occurs with various stakeholders, including British Council Controllers, Managed Service Provider, Group Finance, Global Process Owners, Legal, Risk, Audit, Compliance Leads, Business Operations Stakeholders, Global Finance community, and external partners/suppliers.Due to the global nature of the role, some travel may be required.Main accountabilities

  • Leadership and Management: Role modeling British Council values and EDI, ensuring professionalism, and reflecting client and customer needs. Promoting learning across the unit and wider organization.
  • Consultancy, Analysis, and Problem-Solving: Documenting current processes, identifying business requirements, analyzing processes, and designing future improved global standardized finance processes. Determining RACI elements and KPIs for each process, identifying improvement opportunities, and implementing beneficial changes. Leading the approval process for finance process changes and managing change control.
  • Relationship and Stakeholder Management: Developing and maintaining relationships with MSP and colleagues worldwide. Involving stakeholders in the development of process designs and obtaining sign-off through change control governance.
  • Subject Expertise: Providing guidance on compliance with accounting standards, technical accounting issues, and external reporting requirements. Liaising with specialist finance functions as needed.

This is an order to cash role which includes accounts receivable, income recognition and reconciliation and credit background is essential for this role.Role specific knowledge and experienceMinimum/essential

  • Experience of financial process improvement, process mapping, developing RACI charts and KPIs, controls & risks.
  • Good knowledge of the relevant process area and a good understanding of external bestpractice benchmarks.
  • Proven experience in project work and successfully delivering results/meeting deadlines.
  • Experience of working in an international and multi-cultural organisation, including a shared service operation/managing a diverse group of stakeholders in multiple locations.
  • Experience of working with senior managers and stakeholder engagement. Experience of Microsoft tools including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, MS Project, and SharePoint

Desirable

  • Experience of SAP financial control system.
  • Use of lean six sigma methodology.
  • Experience in data management and integrity. Project Management or Change Management qualification

EducationHigher education – Degree levelCertification and Professional QualificationsQualified accountant – CIMA, ACCA, ACA, or similar accountancy qualification, with some experience post-qualification or equivalent.Language RequirementsThe British Council systems and global processes operate in English.
