Horizon Drilling, a division of Western Energy Services Corp. is hiring an Operations Analyst to join our growing team!

Western Energy Services Corp. is an oilfield service company which provides contract drilling services through Horizon Drilling in Canada and Stoneham Drilling Corporation in the United States. In addition, Western provides well servicing through Eagle Well Servicing in Canada, and provides rental services through Aero Rental Services in Canada.

Position Summary

The Operations Analyst is a member of the team responsible for aspects of inventory and project reporting, capital budgeting and forecasting, as well as equipment administration. It is a position that partners with field operational personnel and members of the head office Finance group. The person in this role demonstrates a proactive approach and initiative in identifying, documenting, and implementing process improvements when handling reporting and analytical activities to ensure that all tasks are handled efficiently, professionally and in a timely manner.

The Operations Analyst is energetic, polished, professional, and independent, with excellent interpersonal skills. This person must be highly organized, with excellent time management skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work with minimal accounting supervision as this position is located in the Field Office.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Inventory Management:

  • Perform all inventory management functions, including overseeing quarterly physical counts
  • Responsible for the day to day recording and accuracy of material transfers, additions, and betterments that affect inventory and capital assets
  • Reconcile and investigate count variances in a timely manner
  • Participate actively in the identification and implementation of system/process improvements, primarily for equipment and service management, field procurement, and inventory
  • Liaise with auditors on scheduled inventory counts

AFE Administration:

  • Assist in the preparation and completion of all AFE’s (capital and expense) and ARR’s, working with field operational personnel and members of the head office Finance group
  • Maintain the Dynamics GP Job Costing module for AFE’s
  • Prepare weekly AFE status update meeting materials
  • Analyze open purchase orders and communicate with Project Managers on timing of receipts
  • Collaborate with the project team to close project and allocation of project costs amongst assets created

Fixed Asset Accounting:

  • Assist in the preparation of full cycle IFRS accounting of the company’s fixed assets: acquisitions/additions, monthly depreciation, retirements, and disposals using the Dynamics GP Fixed Assets module
  • Prepare journal entries for field asset material transfers when required
  • Work with Operations to ensure that the Equipment Manager module is properly linked to the Fixed Assets module where applicable
  • Monitor costs associated with assets under construction
  • Link Equipment Manager System to every asset created in Great Plains subsystem
  • Reconcile fixed asset counts to the subledger on a ad hoc basis and tracking of fixed asset values for tax purposes

Fixed Asset Reporting:

  • Assist in the preparation of divisional and consolidated capital spending reports
  • Prepare divisional subledger to general ledger reconciliations and fixed asset continuities
  • Prepare quarterly/annual reports: management-approved expenditures and other Corporate information requests required for external reporting
  • Prepare detailed reporting for assets under construction (e.g. new rig builds)
  • Track year to date capital spending against approved budgets and forecasts
  • Ad hoc analysis as required

Fixed Asset Management:

  • Document fixed asset processes and procedures
  • Assist in cross-border transaction identification, valuation, and reporting
  • Assist in growing the role and the Capital Asset department as needed as the organization grows and incurs more capital assets through Western’s operating subsidiaries
  • Provide assistance to Field Managers in the development of the annual budget and quarterly forecasts
  • Participate in the implementation of system improvements, primarily for inventory, equipment management, and field procurement

Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Completion of recognized accounting certificate or diploma
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience
  • Ability to work independently and in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience in the oilfield services industry an asset
  • Strong Microsoft Office knowledge is a must, including advanced Excel
  • Proficiency with Dynamics GP (Inventory, Fixed Asset and Job Costing modules) is an asset
