Duration: 6 Months – 1 YearJob Purpose and primary objectives:Client Production DBA

  • To provide 3rd Line support to all Client Databases and associated components that form the teams defined supported estate.
  • Provide support and technical consultancy for database components which include but are not limited to: patching, upgrades, new database build activity, delivery of backup strategy/solutions, standard / emergency changes, production incident resolution, performance tuning and supporting system migrations.
  • Ensure database integrity standards are maintained and database access is secured.
  • Under Service Obsession Initiative, contribute to EOSL by managing the removal of legacy databases and systems. In addition improve system reliability and NFMI maturity ratings.
  • Able to provide assessment of Incident and Change records that impact database with a skill set capable of contributing to RCA and give directions and make recommendations, and, where database related take ownership to improve service, proactively exploring and offering to the wider stakeholder community, including component/ASG teams, improvements including and beyond database related.
  • Have the drive and focus to work in a Service Obsessed environment, putting the Customer first to improve the overall Customer experience.
  • Celebrate success that has been driven through Continuous Improvement and be demonstrative in working practice by striving to improve processes and automation for all aspects of 3L work.

Key responsibilities

  • Install and maintain DBMS software. Ensure databases are deployed in accordance to a predefined design which include RAC as well as HA configurations.
  • Configuration of DBMS parameters to meet the needs of the application.
  • Maintain database integrity and ensure access is secured to BT database standards. Ensure that databases are delivered in accordance to BT Security standards.
  • Design data storage structures for the data described logically in application data models taking account of strategic direction, technical feasibility, performance criteria and cost effectiveness.
  • Monitor database performance, propose and implement agreed performance enhancing changes.
  • Provide infrastructure support in accordance with all applicable and defined SLA’s covering the defined supported estate for Change, Incident and Problem activities
  • Focusing and prioritizing on the key deliverables especially for all those applications deemed critical to BT’s Operations.
  • 24×7 On-call support for Production Faults
  • To accept and participate in assigned project work
  • To investigate all raised issues impacting any aspect of the defined supported estate and consequently our customers; undertaking any necessary remedial action and completion of all defined administration activities
  • Help achieve significant cost savings through the consolidation/migration of systems onto MI platforms and also shutting down legacy estate.
  • Take responsibility for the planning and structure of all tasks (technical or non-technical) assigned as part of my role to ensure a business efficient service is delivered to our customers
  • Contribute to and participate in all knowledge sharing activities and provide web based media content for Technology, my team and customers.
  • Take an active part in DOMAIN (Expertise) activity to develop LWOW and improve ‘Best Practice’
  • Take part in system performance and service improvement consultancy work Assume management of major incidents and take ownership of escalations in accordance with the agreed SLA and all applicable operational documents across all supported platforms.
  • Establish and maintain effective BAU relationship with all teams that influence my team’s role or raise queries, initiating any contact required to deliver an outcome.
  • Help develop, implement and maintain strategy, standards and procedures for system support
  • Define and Introduce automation across all managed platforms where applicable for all support processes which will contribute to reduced CT’s, increased RFT measures and increased self-service customer support.
  • Ensure all designs for Client Databases are fit for purpose and adhere to BT Standards
  • Help to define, develop and implement pre-emptive maintenance, monitoring and housekeeping routines across all defined supported systems to demonstrate a reduction in reactive incidents
  • Provide weekly reports/feedback when requested
  • Help service improvement initiatives – saving space, cost, improving major system performance and reliability, EOSL targets and NFMI scores.
  • Ensure all DAAS/ EC MI build requests are managed and delivered within the defined CT and are RFT.
  • Implement DR and resiliency solutions
  • Ensure all new systems accepted into support have RFT, CT and Automation principles embedded in their design, rejecting anything that is deemed as adding avoidable or manual support overheads
  • Ensure all team Rotas are properly resourced and executed
  • Work in a flexible manner to meet the support needs of the team and the expectations of our customer base.

Key Skills/Knowledge:

  • 5 or more years of Client 3L DBA experience (11g/12c/19c) supporting production databases. Must have knowledge and experience of 12C.
  • Must have significant and demonstrable experience of supporting large scale mission critical systems.
  • Must have ability to investigate and resolve service affecting issues, providing RCA’s and making contributions to PIR calls.
  • Must have ability to carry out database and application specific, performance reviews and make recommendations to improve throughput and service.
  • Knowledge of planning, installing, upgrading, and patching Client Database software
  • Experience of developing and testing backup, recovery and housekeeping strategies for mission critical systems.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to engage at a very detailed technical level with ASG and project teams, through to senior stakeholders adjusting style to suit the audience.
  • Must be prepared to support out of hours when appropriate, this could be for planned build work or to support major service affecting incidents.
  • Must be willing to do oncall.

Experience required:

  • Must have experience and understanding of the following – at 12c and ideally at 19c :
  • RAC – ASM
  • CRS – Grid Control / OEM
  • Scripting Skills – RMAN
  • DB Recovery – Database Performance Tuning
  • Dataguard – Commvault / Netbackup
  • Desirable to have experience and understanding of:
  • GoldenGate – PL/SQL
  • Exadata – Client Security (TDE and Database Vault)
  • Virtulization (VMware, VBox)
