If so, we have a Paralegal opportunity with the Legal Services Division that could be right for you!We are seeking a Paralegal to support the Constitutional and Aboriginal Law team and Family and Surrogate Court Litigation team. This Paralegal will be responsible to provide a broad range of support to litigation counsel handling complex legal matters arising from high priority initiatives including specifically litigation support for Alberta’s Civil Forfeiture Office.The Paralegal responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide support to two lawyers.
  • Independently draft and file court documents at all levels of court (Provincial Court, Court of King’s Bench, Court of Appeal, Federal Court, Federal Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada).
  • Manage and organize files and voluminous records in preparation for complex court proceedings.
  • Identify issues on assigned files and conduct legal/topical research.
  • Monitor case law developments and monitor and track judicial consideration of administrative impaired driving proceedings.
  • Preparation and distribution of regular case law summaries.
  • Create and contribute to legal databases and precedents.
  • Build and maintain a precedent bank of pleadings, legal opinions, filed written arguments.
  • Organize regular meetings, update Trackers, draft Minutes and Action Items.
  • Collaborate with Court Centre staff in various locations across the Province.
  • Coordinate with the Edmonton Constitutional and Aboriginal Law team to ensure processes are consistent between the Edmonton and Calgary Offices.
  • Assist in drafting and filing court documents such as Trial Binders, Applications, Affidavits, Orders, Briefs, Factums and Books of Authorities.
  • Answer routine letters, arrange appointments, return phone calls, and manage lawyer’s correspondence .
  • Liase with a variety of stakeholders including clients, opposing counsel, self -represented litigants, witnesses, and the courts.
  • Perform any other administrative duties assigned by supervisor, lawyer or Director.

The successful candidate will perform high quality work, sometimes under stress and time pressures, while meeting critical deadlines. The ability to proactively handle many tasks with limited instruction and self-prioritize a high-volume workload is vital.
