Objective of this post:

The objectives of this post are to:

  • Contribute to the design, development and delivery of the School’s educational programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Work alongside academic staff, teacher-practitioners and the technical team to ensure an authentic learning experience for students, including management of medicines related supplies and provision of technical support.

RCSI is seeking a professional who is passionate about educating, who would like to contribute to working as part of a team in a multicultural environment. The successful candidate will demonstrate energy, initiative and excellent organisation and communication skills.

Specific Responsibilities include:

Teaching:

  • Assisting in the development, preparation, delivery and assessment of teaching material in the broad areas of pharmacy including pharmacy practice, clinical pharmacy and pharmaceutics
  • Teaching patient-centred care skills (including Self-care, responding to symptoms and dispensing skills), aseptic and extemporaneous compounding skills, and other relevant teaching
  • Providing technical support for preparation, set-up and take down of the School’s teaching practicals
  • Preparing material for authentic teaching and assessment, such as simulations and OSCEs
  • Participating in the delivery of our teaching and learning strategy including the effective use of technology-enhanced learning
  • Exploring and developing technology-enhanced learning for teaching patient-centred care skills, aseptic and extemporaneous compounding skills, and other relevant teaching
  • Utilising a student-centred approach to all duties so as to ensure optimal educational outcomes
  • Ensuring that the medicines in the School are efficiently and cost-effectively procured, safely stored, managed and disposed of appropriately, in accordance with contemporary pharmacy practice guidance
  • Ensuring efficient and cost-effective procurement, maintenance and stock control of other equipment and consumables including information technology requirements

Research:

  • Working alongside the technical team to support research activities, as required

Service:

  • Assisting in the development and co-ordination of school outreach activities
  • Participating in student recruitment activities
  • Providing training and/or inductions for students and staff members
  • Complying with statutory legislation and departmental rules and requirements in furtherance of your own, staff and student welfare and safety
  • Promoting the best interests of RCSI at all times, enhancing the School’s reputation in both pharmacy practice research and education
  • Performing such other duties as may be required from time to time

Person Specification Essential:

  • Has a relevant qualification such as The Pharmaceutical Technician Diploma awarded by the University of Dublin, or a Pharmacy Technician Qualification (NFQ Level 6) awarded by an Institute of Technology, or the Pharmacy Services Certificate (NVQ Level 3) offered by the Irish Pharmaceutical Union, or an equivalent qualification
  • Has significant experience of working as a Pharmacy Technician / Senior Pharmacy Technician
  • Has good knowledge of medicines (names, forms, manufacturers, basic therapeutics), pharmacy legislation and reimbursement schemes in Ireland
  • Has the ability to design and delivery effective education
  • Enthusiasm for your specialist teaching area and the ability to engage your students to successfully transfer this passion and learning
  • An ability to continuously adapt and innovate teaching methods to ensure students’ full understanding
  • Is highly computer/IT literate
  • Has good organisational and administrative skills
  • Has excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well as a member of a team,
  • Has the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Requires minimum direction to effectively deliver on assigned functions, and demonstrates a positive, student-centred and solution focused approach to addressing challenges and ambiguity
  • Has flexibility to work irregular hours on occasion

Person Specification Desirable:

  • Experience in hospital pharmacy, compounding and aseptics would be an advantage
  • Experience of providing education or training would be an advantage
